I’ve encountered a persistent issue while using the ChatGPT macOS client with a Chinese input method (or Japanese, or any language that needs an input method).
When typing in Chinese using an input method (Pinyin), the composition text (the underlined letters you type before confirming a selection) often disappears unexpectedly, which makes it difficult to input correctly. The more detailed description of the problem is as follows:
e.g. I’m typing using Pinyin input method. Normally it would be like this:
Hi, ni hao
(‘ni hao’ underlined with a candidate word ‘你好’. The post can only contain one picture)
If I select a candidate using space or number keys, it will input space or number itself instead of inputting the candidate word
This issue significantly disrupts the usability of the client for me (and users alike). I’d deeply appreciate it if you could look into this and provide a fix in a future update.
The incompatibility between the search button and Chinese input method on macOS severely disrupts the user experience, making it impossible to input Chinese text properly.
I have the same problem. When I enable search, I cannot enter Chinese characters normally. The entered Chinese characters will be automatically deleted, which is very strange.
I’m also encountering this issue on the macOS ChatGPT app. When using Chinese input methods like Pinyin, the text composition often disappears, or the input gets deleted unexpectedly before I confirm it. This makes it really difficult to type in Chinese properly.
The problem seems to occur randomly, but it’s particularly noticeable when the app’s search feature is active. It feels like there’s some compatibility issue between the macOS app and Chinese input methods.
Has anyone found a workaround or heard of any plans to fix this?
Same issue still happened, When i typing Chinese, the word will disappear in the choosing mode. And totally can not type a word with web search option. Hope fix it.
When using either the Cangjie or Zhuyin input methods in the macOS ChatGPT app, the first character component often disappears when typing the second component. For example, typing “口弓” for “吃” will cause “口” to vanish upon inputting “弓”. This makes normal Chinese typing nearly impossible.
This issue does not occur in the web version of ChatGPT (Safari or Chrome), only in the macOS native app. It affects both simplified and traditional Chinese input and disrupts the composition phase (pre-commit text), causing character corruption or auto-commit of incomplete input.
I have verified that:
macOS and ChatGPT are both up to date
Other apps on macOS do not have this issue using the same input methods
Please investigate this bug, as it heavily affects the user experience for Chinese-speaking users.
