Bring Back the Response History Button

Bring Back the Response History Button

I’m writing this to bring the issue back into the conversation, mainly because I had already seen a similar post before, but it has since been archived.

The issue itself is very simple.

Like many people here, I use ChatGPT a lot. I rely on it heavily for writing, managing large amounts of content, working with texts, and handling documents in general.

For that kind of work, being able to see the history and differences between previous versions of ChatGPT’s responses is essential.

The update that was introduced around April, several months ago now, effectively removed a very important feature. For me, and I suspect for many other users, we need to be able to see and navigate between different versions of ChatGPT’s responses.

A branch history is not a replacement for that.

I recently ran into exactly this problem. I went back to an older chat and accidentally clicked a reset/retry button. As a result, I lost the version I was working from. Now I have to manually cycle through previous versions until I reach version 176 just to recover the responses I actually needed.

There is a difference between making an application look cleaner and making it genuinely useful.

I may not be an expert in software design, but it is very clear that, in this particular area, ChatGPT’s current interface is not working well for people who depend on long conversations and iterative writing.

This is not just about aesthetics. Many of us genuinely depend on practical improvements to the product.

The current limitation feels arbitrary.

There may be technical or infrastructure reasons behind the change, but at the very least, please give users a proper way to restore or navigate previous response versions.

Creating a new branch does not solve the problem. The point is not to create another chat or another branch; the point is to continue working from a specific earlier version while preserving the history that led there.

So what exactly is the intended workflow here?

If AI tools are supposed to help us work iteratively with text, removing convenient access to previous iterations makes that workflow significantly worse.

Other AI products handle this more logically. Gemini provides better access to previous variants, and Microsoft’s AI tools also tend to preserve a clearer working structure.

Why should ChatGPT users have fewer options for managing their own conversation history?

ChatGPT is used for many different kinds of work, and for writing-heavy workflows, being able to properly navigate previous response versions is not a minor feature. It is a basic usability requirement.

Please bring back a proper response-history/version-history button.
