Please Reinstate ChatGPT Group Chats
To the OpenAI ChatGPT Product Team
We are asking OpenAI to reinstate Group Chats in ChatGPT.
Group Chats provided something that ordinary shared links, Projects, and individual conversations cannot: a genuine space where multiple humans and ChatGPT can participate in the same conversation together.
That distinction matters.
Why Group Chats were valuable
Group Chats weren’t simply another way of sharing a conversation.
They allowed people to:
- discuss ideas together with ChatGPT present;
- collaborate on projects;
- plan events and decisions as a group;
- have friends or family members interact with the same AI context;
- use ChatGPT as a neutral facilitator when multiple perspectives were involved;
- avoid repeatedly copying and relaying information between separate conversations.
For couples, families, study groups, friends and small teams, this created an entirely different way of using ChatGPT.
A real-world use case
Imagine two people trying to work through a complicated situation together.
Without Group Chat:
Person A → ChatGPT → Person A → Person B → Person A → ChatGPT
Information gets filtered, paraphrased and potentially misunderstood.
With Group Chat:
Person A + Person B + ChatGPT
Everyone can speak for themselves.
ChatGPT can see the conversation as it actually happens and respond to the shared context.
That isn’t a cosmetic difference. It changes what ChatGPT is capable of being useful for.
Please don’t replace it with Share
A shared conversation link is not an equivalent replacement.
Sharing allows someone to see a conversation.
Group Chat allowed people to participate in one.
Those are fundamentally different functions.
What we are asking for
Please consider bringing Group Chats back, preferably with the following improvements:
1. Keep the core functionality
Multiple humans + ChatGPT in one live conversation.
2. Make participation controls clear
The conversation creator should be able to control who can join and whether new participants can invite others.
3. Protect personal context
A user’s private memories, custom instructions and unrelated conversations should remain private unless explicitly shared.
4. Make roles configurable
Allow ChatGPT to participate normally, act as a moderator/facilitator, or simply respond when addressed.
5. Give users control over ChatGPT’s involvement
A simple setting such as:
Respond automatically
Respond when mentioned
Human conversation only unless asked
would make the feature useful for very different situations.
Why bring it back?
ChatGPT is increasingly becoming a collaborative tool.
The natural next step isn’t simply giving one person more powerful AI.
It’s allowing people to use that intelligence together.
Group Chat was one of the clearest examples of that.
Please don’t remove a capability that enables a fundamentally different way of interacting with ChatGPT without considering the users who built workflows and relationships around it.
We aren’t asking for another button.
We’re asking for the return of a capability that made ChatGPT useful in situations where a single-user conversation simply isn’t enough.
Our request
Bring back ChatGPT Group Chats.
Let humans talk to humans.
Let humans talk to ChatGPT.
And, where useful, let all of them talk together.
