Automatically Generated Table of Contents for ChatGPT Conversations

Feature Request for All Platforms

I’d like to suggest adding an automatically generated Table of Contents (TOC) feature for individual ChatGPT conversations, accessible through the three-dot menu.

The Problem

Some ChatGPT conversations become very long, especially when discussing books, researching topics, troubleshooting technology, or working on creative projects. Finding a specific response later can require extensive scrolling.

Although ChatGPT has a conversation search feature, a Table of Contents within an individual conversation would make navigating long chats much easier.

Suggested Feature

  • Automatically generate a Table of Contents for each conversation, organizing major topics and important responses.
  • Include a few keywords or a brief description of each entry.
  • Allow users to tap an entry to jump directly to the corresponding message or response.
  • Make the TOC accessible through the conversation’s three-dot menu.
  • Ideally, allow users to edit entries, add personal notes or keywords, and manually bookmark important responses.

Additional Feature for Image Editing and Generation

For conversations involving image generation or photo editing, the Table of Contents could include brief descriptions of generated images and editing requests.

For example:

  • Graduation photo — lighting and color correction
  • Wedding photo — background cleanup
  • Family portrait — black-and-white engraving style
  • Final approved version of edited image

Users could tap an entry to return directly to that image or stage of the project.

Small image thumbnails would be another helpful addition, although brief descriptions alone would be valuable.

Why This Would Help

This feature would save time, reduce repetitive searching, and make ChatGPT much more useful as an ongoing workspace.

The automatic TOC is the most important part of this suggestion. User-editable notes and bookmarks would be wonderful additions, but even a basic automatically generated TOC with clickable entries would be a significant improvement.

Thank you for considering this feature!

How should the contents list handle edited prompts and regenerated responses? Ideally, each entry would open the exact response it refers to, with saved notes staying attached when the list updates. That seems especially useful for your image-editing example, where several versions can look almost identical.
