Feature Request: Group Chats with ChatGPT
Overview
I would like to suggest adding a Group Chat feature to ChatGPT, allowing multiple users to join the same conversation with ChatGPT.
Instead of a conversation being limited to one user + ChatGPT, users could invite other people into an existing chat and turn it into a shared group conversation.
How it could work
A user could select “Invite to Chat” from an existing conversation and generate an invitation link or invite specific users.
Once they join:
- Multiple users can participate in the same conversation.
- ChatGPT can respond to everyone in the group.
- ChatGPT should be able to distinguish between participants and understand who is saying what.
- Participants could share text, images, files, and other supported content.
- The creator could manage participants and remove people from the conversation.
- Users could leave the group at any time.
- The original conversation could optionally be converted into a group chat without creating a completely new conversation.
Why this would be useful
This could make ChatGPT much more useful for collaboration and social interaction.
For example:
Students:
Several students could work together with ChatGPT on homework, research, or exam preparation.
Friends:
A group could ask ChatGPT questions, plan trips, discuss games, or simply have a conversation with AI together.
Work & Projects:
Teams could use ChatGPT as an assistant during brainstorming sessions, planning, writing, and problem-solving.
Family:
Families could use one shared conversation to plan events, trips, shopping lists, or other activities.
Example
Imagine I have an existing conversation with ChatGPT about planning a trip.
Instead of copying the conversation and sending screenshots to my friends, I could simply press:
“Invite to Chat” → Share Link
My friends join the conversation, and ChatGPT becomes a shared AI assistant for everyone.
ChatGPT could understand messages such as:
«Alex: “I think we should go to Paris.”»
«Sarah: “What would the budget be for three people?”»
«ChatGPT: “For three people, here is an estimated budget…”»
This would make the AI feel less like a private assistant and more like a shared intelligent participant in a conversation.
Privacy & Permissions
Privacy would obviously be important. The feature could include:
- Invite-only access
- Permission controls
- The ability to remove participants
- Clear indication of who can see the conversation
- A warning before sharing a private conversation with others
- Optional group-chat history settings
Potential Future Features
Eventually, Group Chats could support:
- Group voice conversations with ChatGPT
- Shared projects and files
- Different permissions for admins and participants
- Mentioning ChatGPT with “@ChatGPT”
- Group-specific memories or context
- Shared custom GPTs/agents
Why I think this would be valuable
ChatGPT is already extremely useful as an individual assistant. Adding Group Chats could extend that usefulness to situations where people naturally collaborate and communicate together.
Instead of everyone having separate conversations with ChatGPT and manually sharing the results, everyone could interact with the same AI in real time.
I believe this could become one of the most useful social and collaborative features in ChatGPT.
