Add branching for exploring unfamiliar terms during research without changing the main conversation context

Feature Request: Research Branches for Unfamiliar Terms

When doing research in ChatGPT, I often encounter technical terms or concepts that I’m unfamiliar with. If I ask about that term in the same conversation, ChatGPT starts continuing from that new discussion, which can gradually shift the focus away from my original research.

I think it would be very useful to have a branch/side-conversation option for these situations.

For example, while researching “AI in cybersecurity”, ChatGPT might mention terms such as SIEM, SOAR, XDR, or EDR. If I don’t know what SOAR means, I could click “Explore in branch” next to the term.

This would open a separate branch where I could ask:

  • What does SOAR mean?
  • Explain it simply
  • How does it work?
  • Give examples
  • How is it different from SIEM?
  • Go deeper into the topic

After understanding it, I could return to the main research conversation, which would remain exactly where I left it.

The key idea:
Main chat = original research path
Branches = temporary knowledge detours

It would be especially useful for research, studying, programming, cybersecurity, finance, science, and any topic where unfamiliar concepts frequently appear.

Ideally, ChatGPT could even show an “Explore in branch” option when selecting or hovering over a term.

This would make ChatGPT much better for both deep research and learning, because users could explore prerequisite concepts without derailing the original conversation.
