Will OpenAI welcome Tetum language volunteers?

Dear OpenAI Team and Community,

We are a group of volunteers from Timor-Leste, and we would like to express our strong interest in contributing to the improvement and development of Tetum language support in OpenAI products.

Tetum is one of the national languages of Timor-Leste and an important part of our culture, identity, and heritage. We believe that better Tetum support in AI technology would provide significant benefits to our communities, especially students, young people, educators, researchers, and local organizations.

Our volunteer team is ready and willing to contribute our time, knowledge, and language skills. We would be happy to assist with:

  • Tetum translations and proofreading
  • Vocabulary and terminology
  • Native-language examples
  • Cultural and linguistic context
  • Identifying translation or language-quality issues
  • Reviewing AI responses in Tetum
  • Providing feedback to improve Tetum language understanding

We are not asking for payment. Our main goal is to help make Tetum better supported in AI and to help preserve and promote our language through technology.

If OpenAI has any official program, community initiative, evaluation process, or other appropriate way for volunteers to contribute to Tetum language development, we would be very grateful to learn how we can participate.

We are ready to work together as a volunteer community from Timor-Leste.

Thank you for your time and for considering our request.

With respect and gratitude,

Timor-Leste Tetum Volunteer Team

Hey @onosioa,

Thanks for reaching out and for offering to help improve Tetum support.

At the moment, there isn’t a public OpenAI program specifically for volunteer translation or language review. If your group has Tetum texts, recordings, or other language data that you have permission to share, the closest official option is the OpenAI Data Partnerships program. You can use the form on that page to explain what you have and how you’d like to contribute.

I can’t promise that a submission will be accepted or give a timeline for Tetum support, but I appreciate you taking the time to share this with us.
