Why is it not possible to edit a prompt with an image?

Hello.

I’ve been using ChatGPT since March of 2023, I recently upgraded my account to GPT-Plus probably around 3 weeks ago. One thing I’ve noticed is that if you add an image to a prompt, you cannot edit the prompt once it is sent.

This is a minor inconvenience because I do edit prompts frequently, but it would be a nice addition.

Regards,
pickett

this is super annoying. Every time I work with images, I have to add a prompt like “Are you ready for the next step?” before I have an actual useful prompt with an image.

Yes! Thank you. It’s been five months since I posted this and it got buried :frowning:

it can be done with the mobile app only

I see that. Still annoying as I am a desktop user primarily.

It would be really practical if image prompts could be edited like other messages (I’m using web version).

This is far from a perfect workaround. It won’t help in chats with a long context, but it can speed things up in Windows (app or web UI) if you’ve pasted images into the conversation:

  • Copy the text of your image prompt.
  • Open a new chat.
  • In that new chat, press Win + V to open the clipboard history (it supports pasting images) and first, paste only the image.
  • Ask ChatGPT what it sees in the image. When you’re happy, paste your real text prompt from the clipboard history.
I know it’s not perfect, but I hope it helps.
