I am experiencing an issue where I cannot save new memories in ChatGPT. Despite attempting to create and update memory entries, they do not appear to be saved or accessible in subsequent interactions. This affects my ability to maintain contextual information across sessions, leading to inconsistent responses and loss of important context.
There are several other threads about this going on right now
In short…no one knows what is happening, and support has not given any
direct answers to what they are doing about it
Just got this from the support team…have not tried it myself yet
Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to OpenAI Support.

We understand you’re experiencing an issue where memory entries are only saving if they’re very short—around a sentence or two—while longer entries are not being retained. You’ve confirmed that your memory isn’t full, and this behavior only began recently, even though it worked as expected before. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and want to help clarify and troubleshoot.
Based on what you’ve described, there are two likely factors:
1. Model-Specific Behavior
If you’re currently using ChatGPT-4.5 (often shown as GPT-4-turbo), you may notice limitations with memory entry handling. To ensure the best memory performance, we recommend switching to ChatGPT-4o, which is the newest and most capable model as of May 2025.
You can switch models by:
- Clicking the model selector at the top of your chat and choosing GPT-4o.
- Starting a new conversation after switching to apply the model.
2. Additional Troubleshooting Steps
If you’re already using GPT-4o and still seeing issues, please try these steps:
- Log out and log back in – This refreshes your session and re-syncs your memory settings.
- Toggle the memory feature
Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory, turn memory off, refresh ChatGPT, then turn it back on. - Ensure your app or browser is fully updated – Older versions may not fully support current memory features.
- Test ChatGPT in another browser or device – Helps isolate any local issues.
- Try incognito/private mode – Some extensions or privacy settings may interfere with memory saving.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the memory feature works as expected. Let us know how things go after trying the steps above—we’re here to support you all the way.
Now, i had the same issue and it’s working again for me…Now, if they fixed it or not I’m not sure but there is one thing i did that might have fixed it.
I noticed a while back (around the time the “Big” memory save issue i remeber that one of my chats was stuck in the “Responding” meaning the button had a square in the center of the "enter button. Then i had the same “frozen chat” thing happen again, and i figured hey i should delete these chats to incase it’s eating up my tokens or chat log limits etc..so i deleted the new frozen chat and went back and deleted the old frozen chat and then i noticed my Memory started saving again…not sure if that’s what fixed it or not…
