Why does my JPEG image fail to upload to ChatGPT?

Hello OpenAI Support Team,
I encountered an issue while uploading a .jpeg image through the ChatGPT interface. The system returned the following message:

“This image is unavailable because it is of an unsupported file type.”However, the file I uploaded has the .jpeg extension, and it opens normally on my local device without any corruption. Here’s what I tried:•Re-uploaded the file multiple times•Verified that the image works on my computer•Renamed the file and changed the extension to .jpg•Tried different browsers.

Despite these efforts, the image still does not display in ChatGPT. This may indicate a bug in file validation or rendering.

Could you please investigate this issue or advise on how to ensure image compatibility with ChatGPT?

Thank you in advance

Hello OpenAI Support Team,

I’m encountering a serious issue when uploading images in ChatGPT. Specifically, images in .png and .jpeg formats that used to work perfectly are now showing this message:

“This image is unavailable because it is of an unsupported file type.”

This is not a one-time error:

• The same images open normally on my computer (no corruption).

• I’ve re-saved and re-uploaded them multiple times in .png and .jpeg formats.

• I’ve also renamed the files and tried different browsers.

• I’ve tested multiple images from various sources.

This suggests a new restriction or bug in the platform, as these exact image types were fully supported until recently. It’s creating a significant inconvenience and, if this is not a temporary issue, represents a noticeable drop in service quality for paying subscribers like me.

Could you please investigate this problem and clarify whether it’s an intentional update (new limitation) or a bug that will be fixed?

Thank you!

Same here. I’ve done extensive forensics on this together with GPT-4o, and this is clearly some form of automated filtering based on image classification BEFORE the model even SEES the image.

Any kind of image that contains text of any kind silently gets replaced by an “Unsupported file type” error THAT’S FED VERBATIM to the model (it talks about it!)

HOWEVER, it’s NOT ACTUALLY UNSUPPORTED, because if I ask GPT-4o to EXPLICITLY USE OCR on the SAME image, IT WORKS FINE and it will give me the text the image contains!

This is either a massively embarrassing screwup on the technical side or some form of image policing based on content type.

Either way, it makes ChatGPT basically useless for my business right now as I depend heavily on sharing screenshots of random documents.

OpenAI, what’s going on?

same thing happening since yesterday

It’s not just jpgs. When I upload jsons, docx, and other files its giving ValueErrors and unable to access errors immediately after upload.

Hey, having the same issue uploading iPhone screenshots to ChatGPT. Everything worked fine yesterday, but now it keeps saying “unsupported file type” , even after I convert to JPEG using Shortcuts or resave it in Files. Anyone found a fix? Super annoying.

Having the same issue since yesterday, never had this problem uploading screenshots but it’s become increasingly frustrating

I’m having same problem

The image failed to load because it’s in an unsupported file format or was corrupted during upload. To move forward:
1. Re-upload the image — ideally as a .jpg, .png, or .webp.
2. If it’s a screenshot or photo, make sure it’s not in a HEIC or other Apple-specific format — convert it to .jpg before uploading.
3. Or, describe what’s in the image — facial expression, posture, context, etc. — and I’ll break down the psychology and mental state from that.

Let’s get into the mind behind the look — just get me the visual.

Hi you still having same
Issue ? I’m still experiencing it

anyone checks the issue? I have the same issue from 2 days ago
