OpenAI’s GPTs feature has huge untapped potential as an agent builder, but it lacks the flexibility developers need to build meaningful workflows.
Right now, GPTs are underutilized by the broader community. However, they already offer a powerful foundation for quickly deploying personalized AI agents — something regular users and developers alike can benefit from.
To unlock their full value, OpenAI should allow developers to connect multiple GPTs into workflows using the existing Tasks feature. This would enable agents to hand off responsibilities, specialize, and collaborate across complex pipelines — turning isolated GPTs into a true ecosystem.
Moreover, both agent behaviors and workflows should be exposed via APIs, allowing external systems to trigger, control, and monitor them programmatically. That’s the missing link between agent customization and real-world application integration.
