Wayland IME issue with Fcitx5 (Korean input) in ChatGPT Linux app

Hi, I found a reproducible IME issue with the new ChatGPT Linux preview.

Environment:

  • ChatGPT Linux: 26.803.81509
  • EndeavourOS (Arch Linux), x86_64
  • KDE Plasma / KWin Wayland
  • Fcitx5 with Korean input
  • Installed through the AUR package openai-chatgpt, which repackages the official OpenAI .deb binary

Issue:

When ChatGPT is launched normally, the Korean Hangul/English toggle key does not work inside the ChatGPT app.

Fcitx5 itself is working normally, and the same Hangul/English toggle key works correctly in other applications on the same system.

I found that launching ChatGPT with the following flags fixes the problem immediately:

chatgpt --enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland --enable-wayland-ime

After launching ChatGPT this way:

  • the Hangul/English toggle key works normally
  • Korean input works normally

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Launch ChatGPT normally.

  2. Focus the message input field.

  3. Press the Hangul/English toggle key.

  4. The input method does not switch to Korean.

  5. Quit ChatGPT.

  6. Launch ChatGPT with:

    chatgpt --enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland --enable-wayland-ime

  7. Focus the message input field again.

  8. Press the same Hangul/English toggle key.

  9. Korean input now works correctly.

Expected behavior:

ChatGPT should work with the active Wayland/Fcitx5 input method when launched normally, without requiring additional command-line flags.

I understand that EndeavourOS / Arch Linux is not currently an officially supported distribution. However, since the issue disappears simply by enabling the Wayland IME flags while using the same ChatGPT binary, this may indicate an issue with the app’s default Wayland/IME configuration rather than Fcitx5 itself.

I have reproduced this specifically with Korean input. It may also be worth checking whether other Fcitx5 or CJK IME configurations on Wayland are affected.

Thanks!

Hey @nobadwords,

Thanks for documenting this so clearly and for sharing the workaround you found.

The current ChatGPT desktop app for Linux guide explains that the app uses XWayland when available and that native Wayland support is still experimental. If Korean input still doesn’t work when ChatGPT is opened normally, fully quit the app and try launching it with:

chatgpt --ozone-platform=wayland

It’s also worth updating ChatGPT first, since the version in your original report is older. If the issue continues on the latest version, please contact support@openai.com and include your current app version, Linux distribution, desktop environment, and Fcitx5 version.
