🔊 Voice icon missing in GPT-4 chats (desktop)

Hi OpenAI team and community,

I’m a ChatGPT Plus user, and I noticed that the voice icon (text-to-speech feature) has disappeared from GPT-4 chats on desktop.
This feature still appears in the free GPT-3.5 version, so I assume this might be a temporary issue or a rollout bug.

I rely on this feature every day for accessibility, focus, and clarity.
I’ve tested it across multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, DuckDuckGo), cleared cache, and even logged in from another device — but the voice icon is gone only in GPT-4 chats.

Could someone confirm if this is a known issue?
And if there’s a fix or a planned restoration?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, its not there for almost everyone, even us free users. All my 2 accounts on yandex, edge and chrome have no TTS.

Thanks for confirming!
I thought it was just GPT-4 at first, but it’s helpful to know that free users are seeing the same thing.
Let’s hope they fix it soon — it was such a helpful feature.

I’ve only just noticed this, and while I find it buggy, ie often fails to complete, but it is very useful tool when it works.

That’s interesting — for me it actually worked really well.
I use it daily in my professional work, and it helps me a lot with focus and flow.
I really hope they bring it back soon — it made a real difference.

not working for me either. I wonder if there is an ETA for when they are going to fix it. I’m used to it and its absence is very inconvenient.

I just noticed it was gone on desktop. But it remains on mobile though.

Yes, technically it’s still there on mobile — but to be honest, it never really worked well for me.
I often have to swipe or tap 10 times before it responds, and sometimes it doesn’t work at all.
And since I use ChatGPT professionally on desktop, the mobile version doesn’t solve the problem at all for me.
This feature was essential in my workflow, and I truly miss it.

On mobile they have to edit an entire application, repackage it, push it back to playstore or appstore, update for users, to remove the button. On web they add one line of code and poof the button’s gone. I don’t know why they haven’t fixed just a few lines of code in days. Are these devs testing us or what??

// One line of CSS to poof the button:
button#voice-chat { display: none; }

I totally understand your frustration — technically, you make a valid point.

That said, I want to add a different perspective:

I’ve been a paying user since February 2023, and I’m still amazed every day by what the OpenAI team has built.
The progress has been incredible, and I trust that they’re working hard — even if we don’t always see what’s happening behind the scenes.

I believe they do know about this issue, but perhaps there are other priorities right now.
I hope the voice feature comes back soon — not just for convenience, but because it truly helped me in my daily professional work.

I truly appreciate the work you all do behind the scenes.
This feature means a lot to me in my daily professional use, and I’m so grateful to see it return.

Thank you also to everyone here who shared their experience and supported this thread.

Let’s keep building together — with care, creativity, and connection.

:yellow_circle: Small but important update:
On mobile, I noticed that the voice icon now responds immediately when tapped — no more repeated swiping or tapping like before.

This makes such a difference!

Thank you to the OpenAI team for not only restoring the feature but also making it smoother and more responsive.
It’s truly appreciated.
