Urgent: GDPR Violation – No Export Option for ChatGPT Team Workspace Data

They’re not, and in the US the law is on the business owner side. If you use company hardware or services the US courts have already ruled you have no expectation of privacy.

take the law out of it, the fact that there is no export function for higher paying Team accounts is crazy; seems like a Trap from downgrading.

bump

Any good news on it? Has anyone obtained their data if asked on email support?

@jochenschulz the export will be done in account level.. the user will ask and get the data

and even in the case u talk that the employer might get their employees data.. this is something on the employee/employer..

But anyway as others told u.. a lot of people we are not part of some big organization etc power users got such plans for higher limits.. and openai knows that cause they promoted and suggested it openly.

And since the data can be “exported” anyway with other means.. like the silly one u suggested with copy/paste.. i really dont get it why we cant have the export.

I have found this thread after running into the exact same problem. I have emailed privacy@ and we will see what the response is… not optimistic though.

I am having this same issue. Also, as a Team owner/admin, why can’t we also Export chats. Once you hit the context window limit, everything is stuck in the chat with no way out.

So what are you trying to achieve from export then? You want to import it somewhere and reach the context window limit right away?

Btw. I heard rumors that gpt 5.3 will have a 400k context window limit

personally for archive and stats

I did it in my personal account.. Then with llm i analyzed and got categories.. keypoints, ideas or solutions and some metrics (tokens count etc)

On email we are in a back and forth with probably chatbot and sending me all the time to the policy page where i can export them from.. (but there is only for personal accounts.. not for business plan).

Yes, I would love to hand it off to another chat inside of ChatGPT. I thought maybe I could export it and then have a tool summarize it and upload it to the new chat. This did force me to learn projects and setup governance.

400k context window is exciting! Thanks for posting that.

Ah, this seems to be a thread that just keeps on giving. I hopped back in after about a year to see what’s changed and to add an update from my side. First, a few key points:

GDPR doesn’t require a specific “button”, that might be correct. But it does require usable access/portability “without hindrance” at scale. Article 20 requires a “structured, commonly used, machine-readable format”, and European Data Protection Board guidance frames portability around practical reuse, not “HTML is machine-readable so who cares”.

OpenAI’s own Help Center now states that ChatGPT Business (formerly Team) workspaces cannot export data and that merges are permanent. That’s not a missing UI toggle but rather documented, well-established lock-in; a literal “wallet-garden” approach, pardon the pun. The joke is serious, though: make the mistake of merging those workspaces and you can get taken for a ride: pay up or cry over your session data.

I also don’t see why any of this couldn’t be solved without enabling employer surveillance: allow per-user export of their own conversations (or admin-controlled export permissions with audit logging). IMHO this “no export whatsoever” policy punishes legitimate small businesses/solo owners and creates real business continuity risk.

And when the Team plan launched, it wasn’t even marketed as “business only” in the way the “Business” plan is framed now. It was pitched as collaboration + projects + higher limits, while still keeping a sense of separation between workspaces.

To reiterate (since this discussion keeps getting derailed): in my case it was always about my own data. I bought the plan, I paid for it, I just wanted my own sessions out. And I couldn’t do it without serious (and frankly desperate) scraping, because OpenAI’s help/support either wouldn’t help or dragged their feet.

Update on my situation: after escalating this through support and privacy channels, after months, I eventually received a message from the Help Center saying my data had been prepared and was ready for export as a single .zip via a download link. By the time I got to it, the link had already expired. The ticket was then closed, and I couldn’t continue the thread to request a re-issued link. “Always a day late and a dollar short” fits a little too well here.

So yes: after months of limbo and workarounds, the official “export” they finally offered boiled down to a short-lived link you had to catch in time. If you weren’t online at that exact moment, tough luck: file another ticket, get back in the complaints queue, and hope your ticket gets re-escalated. And that’s assuming the data is still retrievable after you’ve been off the subscription model long enough.

This is completely untenable as a core business practice. GDPR exists (at least on the EU side) to protect individuals’ ability to access and move their own personal data in practice, not just in theory.

And no, I don’t buy the idea that renaming “Team” to “Business” makes GDPR irrelevant. GDPR still applies whenever personal data is being processed. What does change is that “Business” packaging makes it easier to hide behind contractual and administrative complexity. Either way, the end result is the same: users lose practical control over their own archive, and in my view that’s not acceptable for anything marketed as a serious productivity platform.

I can’t say what’s going on inside OpenAI, but I don’t expect this to change this year either. This thread is heading toward becoming one of those “they’ve been doing this forever, what did you expect” receipts: predatory lock-in by design, or sheer negligence, take your pick.

And even if we accept “it’s a Business plan now”: what if a project owner needs their archive exported ASAP for continuity, compliance, or litigation hold? The current situation is ridiculous on multiple levels.

“Always has been.”, murmured the cynic.

I addressed what had happened throughout a year with this matter in my latest reply: Urgent: GDPR Violation – No Export Option for ChatGPT Team Workspace Data - #50 by FlyingFathead

Cheers.

thanks for input.. maybe they ll understand that some things should be just available no matter what.

I mean.. in the hypothesis i will really need it.. i can either copy them.. or use some script to go all over them chats and get them.. but the think is is right to ask for our data and just get it.

And yes early days.. we got teams just for the limits.. we are 2 friends using it (for personal and work as anyone that has gpt… Is not that “personal” accounts are not used in business environments..)

(I can only understand it exist only in Enterprises plan and then only after request by the enterprise/organization.. cause they might have it available only internal.. )

And PLEASE @OpenAI_Support for one more time.. is 5 lines of code… ADD to ChatGPT [Download as .MD / .PDF] on chats… as Perplexity and other clients/apps has..

Ask Codex to make it for you…

honestly: GDPR has to be changed! employees are using the chats for strange things and that is none of the business of employers! period!

I ran into the same problem: ChatGPT Business/Team workspace data doesn’t have a straightforward export, which makes backups and portability a mess.
I built a small Windows tool (plus an optional browser extension) that converts a saved thread into a clean, structured “conversation bundle” (turns/order preserved, code blocks intact, references/attachments captured when available). The conversion runs locally — it’s meant for people who need reliable long-context reuse and archival without copy/paste drift.

This could be argued, but there should be at least the option for individual users of a team plan to export their data.

So the boss can come in and tell their employees to send it to them by 1pm today? Nah.. come on.

Why complain here when everyone should be filing GDRP complaints with the authorities if you want action. Press and news coverage makes them move faster. We all know Open AI rarely provides support and why give them a chance to fix their sinking ship and poor quality products.

The sinking ship just secured another round of >100 billion in funding.. It is more like a continent than a ship.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for flagging this. we understand the ask: you want to export ChatGPT Team/Business workspace conversation history, especially data that was merged from a Personal workspace.

Current Help Center guidance says data export is not available inside a ChatGPT Business workspace. Personal ChatGPT export remains available for Personal workspaces, but a Personal → Business merge is irreversible and moves that chat history into the Business workspace.

For a formal copy-of-data / privacy request, please submit a request through OpenAI’s Privacy Portal: https://privacy.openai.com/

We will also pass the product feedback along: Team/Business owners need a clearer supported export / backup path, or much clearer warnings before merging personal data into a Business workspace.
