I had a really tough time today and I need to vent about the UI/UX of the ChatGPT app, which I was relying on during a crisis with my dog.
So, here’s what happened: My dog was wounded by another dog and it was extremely stressful. As someone who’s autistic, I rely on apps like ChatGPT to manage emergency situations predictably. But today, several issues with the app made an already bad situation much worse.
-
Battery and Charger Stress: First off, I was in a foreign country and my phone was low on battery. Finding a charger became a mini-crisis on its own because nobody wanted to lend one to a stranger. This delayed me getting help online when every second counted.
-
Speech Recognition Failures: Once I finally got my phone charged, the voice recognition just wouldn’t work properly. I use SO MUCH OF MY COGNITIVE ENERGY TO RECORD THE RIGHT WORDS FOR AI. It only started working after the third attempt and after I cleared my cache to free up disk space, SO MUCH UNNECESSARY MOVEMENTS JUST TO USE 1 APP. Why doesn’t the app ensure there’s enough space for basic functionality like this? Why it should be solely user’s responsibility (and not automated) to check the diskspace. Its SO frustrating
-
Inaccessible Settings: To top it off, I had to tweak the voice recognition settings while my dog was bleeding beside me, adding layers of unnecessary stress. I always choose language manually, because language “Auto-Detect” NEVER works properly. You say so much words in your presentations about AI, that it “will solve poverty” and other things like inclusivity, after all you are American company. But you fail to bring adequate UI to countries like Georgia, where people to survive financially have to switch on the fly between Turkish, Arabic, English, Russian and Georgian, which makes ChatGPT much worse than even Google’s UI
This experience has seriously made me question the reliability of this app in emergency situations. I understand that no app is perfect, but when basic functionality fails during critical times, it’s more than disappointing. I’m 35, not 18 – I’ve been around long enough to know that we should be farther along with AI usability by now.
Steve Jobs definitely wouldn’t have stood for this. It feels like every step forward in tech comes with two steps back in practical usability. Really disheartened by today’s experience and I hope the development team takes this feedback seriously. Something needs to change.
