Unlimited ChatGPT Memory with Intelligent On-Demand Retrieval

Feature Request: Unlimited Long-Term Memory with Intelligent On-Demand Retrieval

I would like to suggest a major improvement to ChatGPT’s Memory system: unlimited long-term memory combined with intelligent, on-demand memory retrieval.

1. Unlimited Memory

ChatGPT Memory should ideally have no fixed storage or capacity limit for users.

Users should be able to keep adding useful information over time—preferences, ongoing projects, important conversations, instructions, personal workflows, interests, goals, and other context that they want ChatGPT to remember.

The user should remain fully in control and be able to:

  • Add new memories at any time
  • Edit existing memories
  • Delete individual memories
  • Clear groups of memories
  • Search through their stored memories
  • Decide what ChatGPT is allowed to remember

There should be no arbitrary maximum memory capacity that forces useful information to be removed simply because the user has accumulated too much context.

2. Intelligent Memory Retrieval

Unlimited memory should not mean that ChatGPT has to read or process every stored memory for every message.

Instead, ChatGPT should use an intelligent retrieval system—similar to semantic search or a memory-retrieval layer—to determine which stored memories are relevant to the user’s current request.

For each new message, the system should:

  1. Understand the user’s current request.
  2. Search the user’s entire memory database efficiently.
  3. Identify the most relevant memories.
  4. Retrieve only the information necessary to answer the request.
  5. Ignore unrelated memories.
  6. Generate the response using the retrieved context.

For example, if a user has thousands of stored memories but asks a question about a project discussed several months ago, ChatGPT should retrieve the memories related to that project without processing thousands of unrelated memories.

3. Relevance-Based Retrieval Instead of Fixed Memory Limits

Rather than limiting how much a user can store, ChatGPT could use relevance, context, recency, and user-defined importance to determine what should be retrieved.

The system could intelligently prioritize:

  • Memories directly related to the current question
  • Frequently relevant information
  • Recently updated information
  • Information explicitly marked as important by the user
  • Long-term preferences that consistently affect responses

This would allow the memory database to grow substantially without requiring the entire database to be loaded into every conversation.

4. User-Controlled Memory

The user should have complete visibility and control over their stored memory.

Ideally, users could view, search, edit, organize, export, or delete their memories whenever they want.

It would also be useful to provide an option to mark certain memories as high priority, so ChatGPT knows that particular information should receive greater importance when relevant.

5. Efficient Architecture

From a technical perspective, the memory system could maintain a large persistent memory store while using an efficient retrieval mechanism to select only relevant information for each request.

This could allow ChatGPT to have a very large or effectively unlimited memory database without significantly increasing the amount of context that must be processed for every message.

The important distinction is:

Unlimited stored memory ≠ unlimited context loaded into every response.

The system should store as much information as the user chooses, while retrieving only the small subset that is relevant to the current task.

6. Why This Would Be Valuable

This would make ChatGPT much more useful as a genuine long-term personal AI assistant.

A user could gradually build a persistent knowledge base over months or years without worrying about reaching a memory limit. ChatGPT could then retrieve the appropriate information whenever it becomes relevant.

This would be particularly valuable for:

  • Long-term projects
  • Learning and education
  • Writing and research
  • Personal workflows
  • Recurring tasks
  • Preferences and instructions
  • Long-running conversations
  • Complex projects that evolve over many months or years

Core Idea

The goal is not simply to make ChatGPT remember more.

The goal is to make ChatGPT capable of maintaining a large, persistent, user-controlled memory database while intelligently retrieving only the information needed at the right moment.

In one sentence:

Let users store as much memory as they want, while ChatGPT intelligently searches and retrieves only the relevant memories when needed.

I believe this could provide a much more powerful long-term memory experience while keeping ChatGPT efficient, fast, and user-controlled.

Hey www.sajahanali698, welcome!

Memory already keeps useful context up to date and offers a summary you can edit: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148. Thanks for the ideas for unlimited storage and more control over searching, organizing and retrieving it—we’ll pass them along. No timeline to share yet.
