Unauthorized $295 OpenAI charges not visible in my account — possible API auto-recharge

On September 14, 2026, my bank card was charged twice by a merchant identified as OPENAI:

  • $118 at 19:18, Asia/Baku

  • $177 at 20:19, Asia/Baku

Total successfully charged: $295.

I did not authorize these transactions. They do not appear in my ChatGPT billing history or my OpenAI API account, and I received no invoice, receipt, or Order ID.

After the successful charges, there were three additional failed attempts for $177, occurring at approximately hourly intervals. I blocked the card to prevent further charges.

The pattern appears consistent with a possible automated API credit purchase or auto-recharge process in an unknown OpenAI organization. However, I cannot access or identify that organization.

I already contacted OpenAI Support. They asked me for an invoice or Order ID, but I cannot provide one because I did not make these purchases and the transactions are not connected to any account or organization visible to me.

I have bank screenshots, exact timestamps, RRNs, and the complete transaction history available to provide privately to a verified OpenAI Billing/Fraud specialist.

Could an OpenAI Support representative please help route this to the appropriate API Billing/Fraud or Payments team, locate the unknown organization using my payment method, disable the associated payment token, and review a refund of the two unauthorized charges totaling $295?

My separate legitimate $20 ChatGPT Plus subscription must not be canceled or affected.

Quoting the help center guide:

We strongly recommend contacting your bank immediately if you believe the charge is unauthorized to prevent further fraudulent activity. Prompt action can limit your liability and start the dispute process efficiently.

Thank you for your response. I have already contacted my bank and blocked the card.

However, no bank dispute is currently active because OpenAI’s policy states that a separate refund cannot be issued while a payment dispute is active.
Support informed me that the transactions cannot be located without an Order ID, even though the Help Center states that OpenAI can investigate unrecognized charges and review refund eligibility. I cannot provide an Order ID because I did not make these purchases and cannot access the unknown account or API organization where my card was used.

Therefore, the issue has not yet been resolved. Could you please advise whether this case can be routed to an authorized Payments/Fraud specialist? If OpenAI formally declines a merchant-side investigation, I will proceed with the bank dispute.

I think they are referring to a payment dispute/chargeback opened with your bank or card issuer, not a dispute opened with OpenAI.

The wording makes that pretty clear:

“If you have already opened a payment dispute, let Support know its status and whether your bank has returned the funds.”

Yes, that is also my understanding. No payment dispute or chargeback has been opened with my bank.

My question is not about the meaning of “payment dispute.” I am asking whether this existing support case can be routed to an authorized Payments/Fraud specialist before I initiate the bank chargeback.

OpenAI Support declined to investigate because I cannot provide an Order ID, even though the absence of an Order ID is precisely the result of these purchases being unauthorized.
