I’m having trouble entering my billing information because the system keeps indicating that there is an auto-recharge option that needs to be enabled, but I cannot find where to access or enable it. I’ve checked the billing and payment settings, but there doesn’t seem to be any visible option related to auto-recharge. I need assistance updating my billing information or guidance on how to locate and manage the auto-recharge setting so I can complete my payment successfully.
I am having the same problem.
This is where auto-recharge should be located:

This forum topic at 6 hours is not the longest chain of replies with this problem; it is system-wide. Breaking issues were pushed out about 8 hours ago. You can report the ongoing issues or whether it has been resolved for you if you retry, perhaps after a toggle.
Auto-recharge absolutely should not be mandatory, and you would be wise not to leave it enabled, and frankly wise not to leave a payment method in the platform site (nor prepay more than you can afford to lose). Also wise not to pay when there are ongoing problems. That recharge feature has gone crazy before, multiple times, from backend payment system issues, and emptied people’s bank balances.
Hi everyone — I am completely stuck in a billing loop and I need help from someone on the team because nothing in the UI is behaving correctly.
Here is the exact issue:
-
I am trying to add credits so I can use the OpenAI Platform API (TTS, responses, etc.)
-
Every time I click “Add payment details”, I get the error:
Missing required parameter: 'auto_recharge_enabled'
-
The UI then dumps me back to the same Billing Overview page with $0 credit.
-
When I click Payment methods, it tells me “You have not started a billing plan yet,” and then sends me right back to Billing Overview again.
-
When I click “Go to billing,” I get redirected to the Docs page instead of actual billing.
So I’m stuck in a circular loop between these three screens:
-
Billing Overview → “Add payment details”
-
Error popup: Missing required parameter auto_recharge_enabled
-
Redirect to Billing Overview
-
Trying “Payment methods” → “You must add payment details” → redirects again
-
Attempting to access
/billing/credit-cards→ “Page not found”
I cannot get to any real credit card entry screen.
What I’ve already tried (none of this worked):
-
Logging out and logging back in
-
Using Chrome, Edge, and Firefox
-
Clearing cache and cookies
-
Incognito mode
-
Restarting browser
-
Clicking every billing link on the left panel (Overview / Payment methods / Billing history / Preferences)
-
Clicking “Go to Billing” button
-
Clicking the organization settings dropdown in the top right (E icon)
-
Checking my organization — I do have an organization ID and name (“Personal”)
-
Verifying that I’m NOT in read-only mode
-
Checking that the org isn’t archived
-
Clicking direct links like:
https://platform.openai.com/account/billing/credit-cards → results in “Page not found”
Important detail:
-
I have an Apple subscription for ChatGPT, but this billing does NOT apply to OpenAI API usage.
-
I need to add credits for platform API, but the platform billing UI will not let me proceed.
Where the UI seems broken:
-
“Add payment details” opens a modal, but instead of letting me enter anything, it errors instantly.
-
The billing page seems to think “auto_recharge_enabled” is a required field, but there’s no UI for it.
-
The “Payment methods” page is blocked until a billing plan exists, and the option to start one is missing.
What I need:
I need someone from OpenAI support to:
-
Reset or initialize my billing configuration
-
Enable payment method entry on my organization
-
Or otherwise bypass the “auto_recharge_enabled” error so I can add credits
I’m happy to share my organization ID with support privately if needed.
This has been looping for hours and I can’t move forward with development.
If anyone has experienced this or knows a workaround, please let me know.
Thanks.
