Unable to Enable MFA (TOTP and SMS Both Fail) – Blocks Codex Remote

I’m hoping someone from OpenAI can help, as I’ve completely exhausted the normal troubleshooting.

I subscribed to ChatGPT Plus specifically to use the new Codex Remote functionality. Unfortunately, Remote requires MFA, and I’m completely blocked because I cannot enable it.

When I attempt to enable MFA in ChatGPT → Settings → Security, every verification method fails with:

“Failed to verify code. Try again.”

Eventually I was locked out after too many attempts.

I’ve tried all of the following:

  • Microsoft Authenticator
  • Google Authenticator
  • Proton Authenticator
  • SMS verification
  • Brave and another browser
  • Multiple computers
  • Automatic date/time enabled
  • Email/password account (not Google or Apple sign-in)

Every method produces exactly the same verification failure.

I can’t find any way to contact OpenAI Support.

The Help Center only shows articles, and I don’t have a “Send us a message” or “Contact Support” option anywhere.

Questions

  1. Has anyone else experienced both TOTP and SMS verification failing when enabling MFA?
  2. Is there another way to contact OpenAI Support for an account-specific issue?
  3. Can anyone from OpenAI help investigate whether my account’s MFA enrollment is in a bad state?

At this point, I don’t believe this is a client-side issue. The same behaviour occurs across multiple authenticator apps, browsers, computers, and SMS verification, and it’s currently preventing me from using a feature I upgraded to Plus specifically to access.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE HELP, someone from OPEN AI support, i keep recieving un related replies in the support. please help

Thanks for flagging this, and thanks as well to everyone who shared additional details.

The issue has now been fixed. If you're still experiencing it, try setting up MFA again using a newly generated QR code and the latest verification code from your authenticator app.

If you're still having trouble after that, let us know what you're’re seeing and the community can help take a closer look.

Thanks Mark! Confirmed fixed at my end :folded_hands:t2:

Thanks for confirming, @awdude! Glad to hear it's working on your end now. Really appreciate you coming back to update the thread. That confirmation helps others know the fix is rolling out as expected.

Curious if @SamePerson is still running into the issue, or if it's been resolved on your end as well?
