Typing lag in the text prompt field after GPT-5 release

Hello,

I am on Windows 11, latest Google chrome version, on very powerful PC. After GPT5 released yesterday, I started to notice very uncomfortable typing lag when typing prompts into ChatGPT’s text prompt field. It’s very small lag, couple hundred milliseconds at most, but more than enough to consistently throw off my typing. Especially given that it tends to fluctuate a lot. Can you fix this? It’s very frustrating.

I tried incognito mode tab to ensure Chrome extensions are not a factor, but it did not help.

I also tried all the competing mainstream commercial LLM services and none of the suffer from the same typing lag problem.

It’s been kinda driving me crazy because it makes me mistype every other word. So I’ve been investigating (with the help of GPT5).

With the same browser, same extensions, same PC, same setup, I’ve tested 3 different mainstream LLM websites. Test was always the same, blank new chat, just typing in the text prompt field while Chrome dev tools performance profiler capture is enabled:

ChatGPT:

Gemini:

Grok:

Neither Gemini nor Grok have any typing lag I can feel, but ChatGPT does. Both Gemini and Grok graphs look quite similar and appear to have nearly no red/yellow segments in the Frames bar. ChatGPT on the other hand has quite unique looking performance graph, and has quite a few red and yellow segments in the Frames bar, which match up quite well with the perceived jitter in the input latency when typing.

It appears that something makes ChatGPT’s web UI have quite a few partially presented or dropped frames when typing, compared to other websites.

Im not sure if its the same, but ive had a similar issue for a while.

When I open a new ChatGPT window in my browser and begin typing immediately, the first few keystrokes are either not registered at all or appear out of order, typically at the end of the sentence instead of the beginning.

Example Behavior:
Typed: Hello, how are you?
Result: ello, how are you?H

Just log out and login. This solved my problem 100%

No need to clear cache or cookies.

P.S. I regularly use the Chrome Profiler for measuring CLS and INP but I rarely get those yellow and pink and those cluttered sticks. I wonder how you make sense out of them?

I’ve been experiencing the same issue. For me it seems to only happens in conversations within projects. When I open a new chat out of my existing projects, it stopped lagging. Whenever I try to go back and use a chat inside a project, I have the typing lag again.

Same for me on the Mac Chrome. Logging out and in made is slightly faster but not only the typing is real slow but GPT-5 (Thinking) sends the browser to a CPU tailspin where the browser is asking to kill the tab or wait.

It’s been 2 weeks since release and the lag is still there. Still not fixed, still dropping frames while typing.

Logging in to say I’m having the same issue and it’s driving me crazy, making the app unusable.

+1 This is making it very difficult to operate. The lag is often many seconds, as in, I’ve typed 20 words before they begin to display in the prompt box. Windows 11, Chrome fully updated, High performance machine. I should clarify that Im using the chatGPT installation/app - and am not operating in Chrome.

I am also noticing this. It is really frustrating - I am not sure why the chat widget has to look at each of my character that I am typing. This lag is really making it unusable. Is anyone within Open AI looking this problem ? I have been using ChatGPT every since it was released and have never seen this issue.

Same issue here, follows me to multiple PCs, multiple browsers. Long output delays as well. Unusable.

Unfortunately it has regressed further. The typing lag is now more significant the longer the conversation gets. Previously, it was ever present, but not affected by the length of the conversation. Now it’s just much harder to type the longer the conversation gets.

The performance capture during the typing looks really embarrassing:

This has become untenable. I know I am only a single very small scale customer, but its now just dysfunctional. I’ll need to cancel and give Anthropic and Claude a try.
So crazy that an AI becomes unusable because it cant handle input from a keyboard. And that chatGPT seems to care not about this issue.

Same here. I do think it depends on how long the chat is, all my longer chats are borderline unusable on PC, and are fine on mobile. In a new chat, it’s okay in my case, but in longer chats, it becomes almost impossible to type. Is it like trying to have a look into what you’re typing? xD I don’t see any other reason for the input window to be affected.

It definitely seems to be times of day, other times it works alright. When it is bad, I open a notepad to type out what I want to say, and paste it into the prompt. I have to be careful to only click the send button once(and hope it received it, as there is no indication for 10s of seconds), as if I click it twice, it will have turned into the stop button, and canceled my request.

I don’t see why text typing should ever lag, I am not requesting anything yet, we are not trying to reinvent the wheel here. I should be able to type with zero lag, it is typing for heaven’s sake. The submit button must also never lag, immediately changing to loading or stop after the click. What happens after that is understandable, as info is being requested.

But basic cave man stuff should not lag. Ever.

I’m experiencing the same issue. So has this issue been addressed or have anyone resolved it?

Hi everyone, I’m experiencing the same issue, I’m using a MacbookPro M3 pro with Microsoft Edge as principal browser and other Macbook Pro M2 pro with chrome as principal browser, and on both computers the problems are the same.
Using chatgpt 5 is a real pain, with very slow processing times, delayed responses, freezing, and typing lag. Does anyone know what can be done?

Same here, untenable. I have some projects with a long history (which is needed due to the amount of information) - and their loading times and lag sometimes extends the minutes mark.

Agreed - it’s completely unusable for longer chats from PC. Mobile works fine. Clearly a UI/ front end issue. Like you, I’m looking for a different AI for this reason (also due to the incessant ‘would you like me to _’ questions GPT5 inserts). So … do Anthropic, Claude, Gemini, Grok etc work well in this regard?

Im having the same problem. On my mac everything is perfect

windows 10 / 11 (different devices) complete lag when typing in boxes, clicking around the app

this also happens in chrome on both devices

cpu of gfx power is no issue, running 24 cores and high end gfx card.

to be honest windows is unusable at this point, no idea what to do to try and fix
