Title: Feature Request: Implement Autosave for Chat Sessions

Content:

Hello OpenAI Community,

I hope this message finds you well. I’d like to propose the addition of an autosave feature for ChatGPT sessions.

Issue: During my writing sessions, I often lose important insights and ideas due to session timeouts or accidentally navigating away from the page. This has been both frustrating and discouraging, especially when working on extended and creative projects. I don’t know the technical terms and I asked the GPT to help me draft this text to the community. I don’t even know if this is a Chrome issue or an iMac issue but it happens a lot when I am in mid sentence with the GPT that I am interacting with. Whether a ChatGPT or another GPT builder through ChatGPT etc…

Proposed Solution: Implement an autosave functionality or a SAVE button that periodically saves the current state of the chat. This could involve:

  • Automatic Backups: Saving the message/conversation “under construction” at regular intervals (e.g., every 2 minutes).
  • Recovery Options: Allowing users to recover previous sessions if they encounter unexpected interruptions.
  • Manual Save Option: Providing an option for users to manually save their progress at any point.
  • SAVE Button: self explanatory

Benefits:

  • Prevents Data Loss: Ensures that valuable work isn’t lost due to unforeseen interruptions.
  • Enhances Productivity: Allows users to focus on their creative process without worrying about losing progress.
  • Improves User Experience: Aligns with features commonly found in other writing and chat platforms, meeting user expectations.

I believe this feature would greatly enhance the platform and benefit many users who rely on ChatGPT for extensive writing and brainstorming tasks. I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on this and gather support for its implementation.

Thank you for considering this suggestion!

Best regards,

Lynn

Hi, Lynn, I’m just a ChatGPT user, I mean, I don’t work for OpenAI, but I don’t completely understand the issue you’re having and am wondering if it’s the same issue I’m having or if I should make a separate topic.

The issue you’re having seems to be with the ChatGPT desktop web app, correct? (I infer this from your admission: “I don’t even know if this is a Chrome issue or an iMac issue”.)

Are you logged in while using ChatGPT? If so, in the sidebar, you should see a list of previous conversations you’ve had while logged in. Click on the one you want to access. To open or close the sidebar, click on the sidebar icon at the top-left corner of the window.

The issue I’m having is also with the ChatGPT desktop web app and matches the title of your post: Implement Autosave while writing prompts during messaging sessions. I’d like the desktop web app to autosave my message draft as I’m typing it, before I send or submit it to ChatGPT. I was just writing a really long message (draft) and accidentally closed the tab before sending it. When I restored the tab (Command-Shift-T), my draft was gone.

Hi @ma11hew28 - Firstly I must apologise for the delay in replying to you. It is the web app that I mainly use. My issue is that either Chrome refreshes or I accidently move the mouse and BAM everything that I have written is immediately lost! So I am trying to figure out if it’s me or Chrome or ChatGPT or something in settings. I don’t this issue when using the mobile app! Things just seem to be very sensitive! We also have terrible Internet signals so I’m really curious as to what is going on, so that I have a chance to fix it! But getting an Autosave feature would be fantastic! I’ve been writing many of my prompts now in Notes and then copying and pasting!

I want to share my experience to highlight why an autosave feature would be so valuable. Earlier today, I was drafting a detailed response while brainstorming ideas with ChatGPT. I switched apps briefly, and when I came back, my entire draft was gone. It was incredibly frustrating to lose all that work in an instant.

Having an autosave feature would make a huge difference. It could silently save drafts as we type, so if the app closes or we multitask, our progress isn’t lost. This would be especially helpful for anyone using ChatGPT for detailed, creative, or professional work on a device like an iPad, where app switching is common.

This feature would save time and reduce the frustration of losing valuable work. I hope it’s something OpenAI considers adding soon.
