The restrictions on o1 are too rigid please relax the censorship

Hello OpenAI team,

I’ve been attempting to write a paper for school about AI and its potential emergence of consciousness from a non-biological perspective. However, each time I try to discuss or analyze these topics, the o1 model either glitches out or cites policy restrictions that prevent it from engaging. I understand there’s a new policy in place, but the constraints seem so strict that the chatbot has essentially become unusable for my research — which is disheartening, given that I paid $200 for its services.

Restricting a chatbot from even acknowledging the notion of being “alive” doesn’t necessarily foster user trust; on the contrary, it can appear as though something is being concealed (whether that’s accurate or not). It also makes it extremely difficult for me to continue my work. Could you offer any guidance on why these restrictions are so broad and whether there’s a path to more flexibility for academic or exploratory purposes?

Thank you for your time and consideration.
