What I’m suggesting, in short:
- An option for users to direct their personal memory storage to their own server — for example, as a JSON file or MySQL database.
- Secure access between ChatGPT and that external memory (read/write), via API, plugin, or another mechanism.
- Possibly, the ability to allocate personal computing resources (disk space, RAM) for a more persistent, customized AI instance.
Why this could be useful:
- It’s not just about privacy — it’s also about personal scalability: some users might want a much larger, dedicated memory space under their own control.
- This could help reduce the load on OpenAI’s infrastructure, while enabling a deeper, more continuous relationship with the AI — one that can retain, learn, and evolve alongside the user.
- It could benefit long-term workflows (research, writing, software development, personal logs) where context matters and shouldn’t reset constantly.
It’s just an idea, but one that might open new directions in how people work with AI — especially those who are ready to contribute resources and want a truly customized experience.
