I’m reaching out to share feedback and hopefully open a discussion about the current limitations around updating the email address of a Team workspace owner.
As it stands, regular team members can update their email address without losing any data. However, owners do not have this option. To change the email associated with an owner account, the process requires transferring ownership, creating a new account, and rejoining the workspace — which results in complete loss of chat history, memory, and assistant context.
This creates a situation where the most engaged user — the owner — has fewer options and more limitations than regular team members. It also discourages long-term use of memory and context features, especially for users trying to separate work and personal email use down the road.
Had this been clear from the start, we likely would have opted to keep separate accounts rather than set up a Team workspace, simply to avoid these limitations.
I’d love to know if this is a technical constraint or something being considered for future improvement. If anyone has found a way to manage this without losing data, I’d appreciate your input as well.
Thanks for sharing this. Your feedback is spot-on and this is something we're working on fixing in the coming months.
At the moment, we don't support changing the email address associated with any account, including owners of Team or Enterprise workspaces due to the way we've built out our identity system. Currently,
The email used at the time of signup becomes a static identifier for the account.
Any change to the email (e.g. due to domain switch, personal/work separation, rebranding, marriage) requires creating a new account.
This new account will not inherit: Chat history, Memory, Assistant context, Subscriptions. You can export and import data, but Memory is not included here.
Custom GPTs can be reassigned if you're the workspace owner
I've shared your feedback with the team working on this and please feel free to share any additional context.
Do you mean that you will be coming up with something where the email address is not static to the GPT over the next few months and where we will be able to retain history when changing our email address?
