Suggestion for Enhanced Memory Management and Sequential Organization in ChatGPT

Dear OpenAI Team,

I’d like to share some feedback regarding the memory feature and suggest enhancements that could significantly improve its usability for users managing ongoing projects or contexts.

The memory feature is an excellent tool for continuity, but I believe its utility could be expanded by addressing a couple of key areas:

1. Project-Based and Toggleable Memories

  • Use Case: In my Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, I want to retain the history of each campaign—including characters, inventory, relationships, and decisions—so it carries forward into future sessions. However, if I start a new campaign or project, I’d prefer the ability to keep memories separate to avoid confusion or overlap.
  • Suggestion: Allow users to create distinct “memory profiles” tied to specific projects (e.g., D&D Campaign 1, Campaign 2, Work Project X). These profiles could be toggled on or off, with an option to start conversations with memory disabled entirely.

2. Sequential Session Organization

  • Use Case: When I return to a project after multiple sessions, I sometimes find that memories from past sessions are jumbled or stuck at an earlier point, especially if I’ve worked across several smaller chats instead of a single continuous thread. This issue often occurs because managing a single large chat becomes unwieldy—it can cause access errors, lag, and overall slowdowns.
  • Suggestion: Implement a feature where sessions within the same memory profile are automatically organized sequentially, with an optional “Session Title” for each new chat (e.g., Game Session 2: Into the Depths). This would help ensure that events, decisions, and updates are referenced in the correct order, preventing confusion about the most recent developments.

3. Selective Memory Retention and Review

To further enhance control, I’d also recommend allowing users to review and selectively save specific details into memory for each profile. This would help users preserve only the most relevant information without overloading the system.

By implementing these features, I believe the memory functionality would become far more versatile, especially for users managing complex, multi-session projects like games, creative writing, or professional workflows.

Thank you for your consideration of these suggestions. I appreciate the ongoing improvements to ChatGPT.

Best regards,
Arren
