I’m posting this for visibility because Standard Voice has disappeared for me on both the ChatGPT Windows app and the browser, while I can still access it on iOS. Other users appear to be reporting the same behavior.
This matters because Standard Voice and the newer voice models are not functionally equivalent.
For those of us who use ChatGPT for long, complex conversations, Standard Voice provides something incredibly important: continuity.
I can have a deep conversation in text, establish context, work with a Custom GPT or specialized instructions, and then continue that same interaction through Standard Voice. It feels like I am continuing the conversation with the same assistant.
The newer real-time voice experience does not currently provide that same level of continuity. It has different limitations around context, tools, Skills, and complex reasoning. For users who have built sophisticated assistants and workflows inside ChatGPT, those differences are significant.
There is also a practical issue: the newer real-time voice architecture is a much more computationally intensive way to handle conversations where many of us simply want to talk to the same text-based assistant we already use.
Standard Voice does not need to compete with Live Voice.
They serve different purposes.
Keep developing Live Voice. Make it more capable. But please don’t remove Standard Voice before the replacement can provide the same context, tools, continuity, and depth.
OpenAI listened when users raised this concern before. I’m hoping they’ll listen again.
If you’ve also lost Standard Voice on Windows or the web—especially if you still have it on iOS or Android—please comment with what platform you’re using.
