Speech-to-text in ChatGPT app now skips text field – how to restore editable input?

This morning I had an update available on Play Store to ver. 1.2025.098 and I can report that the blue listening bar & straight to send feature is still in place. Really disappointing.

Update 16.04.2025

Still no improvements. It’s really bizarre how some cohort of users is stuck with this, while for others it reverted.

I really appreciate all the great features available! I do have a small preference, though: it would be super helpful to monitor how long I’m speaking. As some of you might know, there’s a five-minute limit for my speech-to-text, and after that, it can be a bit risky as conversion become uncertain. Having the ability to track my time and the option to tweak the text afterward would be great. Also, I just have to say, I love the visual aspects, like the blue text space and the waveforms—they’re very appealing!

I never comment on things But because Chad GBT is going to be the option to do other things while it’s thinking I’m going to say right now that typing in this box with my voice is much easier than on chat GBT. That doesn’t make any sense for a product that I pay over $25 a month for. It sucks it was better before I agree with everybody about me. Developers change it back and admit a mistake - We all make them we’re human.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to check in — does anyone know if there’s been an official statement from OpenAI regarding the recent changes to the speech-to-text feature in the mobile app? Specifically, the removal of the editable text field before sending a voice input.

This functionality was incredibly useful — being able to review, correct, and fine-tune our spoken input before sending made a huge difference in both quality and control. The current “instant send” method makes speech input less reliable and adds unnecessary friction to our workflows.

Thanks to everyone who’s already spoken up or shared workarounds — your input is really valuable! Please keep the conversation going. This feature mattered for how we work, how we think, and how effective we are day to day. It’s worth advocating for!

Let’s stay on this — it affects all of us.

Thanks again!

Just to give you an idea—I’ve been stuck with this for about three weeks now, and it’s persisted through at least two minor app updates via the Play Store. I’ve submitted two bug reports through the Help Center (including one with a live call center rep), but never got any response or followup. There are multiple threads on the forum about this issue, and I still haven’t seen a single developer or community rep acknowledge it. Honestly, the whole thing is bewildering. Limbo and endless waiting.

Feature is for me unusable again. There is a 50/50 chance that it will just freeze and be stuck on Listen….

Switching back to a reliable VTT service for the moment.

I wanted to follow up on this post. Today, as of May 6th (at least for me, on Galaxy S22), the speech to text function returned to it’s original version for me.

This has been an immense relief and hope to God that this isn’t some A/B testing fluke and it’s here to actually stay this time.

That sounds fantastic — truly a hope for all of us!

By the way, which version number do You currently have on Your phone? And to everyone else here: is it the same for You now too?

@Znakovi_nade I can confirm too that I got the rollback with the previous system. Probably an A/B test that is rolling out at the moment.

My app’s version is 1.2025.119, updated on May 2nd.

Please at least provide an option to use the old style speech to text. It’s not a problem if you can guarantee 100% accuracy, however it is not. It is very annoying to see the auto sent transcript has recognition errors.
