Simplify the Model Experience & Improve Plugin and Canvas Management

Dear OpenAI Team,

First off, thank you for building something truly incredible. I use ChatGPT daily for work, creativity, planning, and more. It’s transformed how I operate and think, and I’m grateful.

That said, I’d love to offer some constructive suggestions on how the user experience could become more intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly—especially for non-technical users.

:one: Model Overload: Too Many, Too Confusing

  • After using GPT-4.5 Research Preview, I reached the usage limit and was switched to GPT-4.0 (labeled as GPT-4).
  • However, there’s no clear indication if I’m now using GPT-4.0, GPT-3.5, or something else entirely. If GPT-3.5 is running, it doesn’t appear in the model selector.
  • The lack of transparency here is confusing for users. A simple, visible label or token meter would really help.

Suggestion: Label models clearly and give users a simple usage gauge (e.g., “You’ve used 320k of 400k tokens”).

:two: Canvas Tabs = Digital Hoarding

Canvas tabs accumulate endlessly, and there’s no way to delete or close them cleanly. It creates clutter and confusion.

Suggestion: Add simple controls to each canvas:

  • :wastebasket: Delete
  • :file_folder: Archive
  • :check_mark: “Close & Don’t Save”

:three: GPT Plugins: “Hide” ≠ Uninstall

I tried a GPT I didn’t want. There’s no uninstall or “remove” button—only a “Hide” option. This makes it unclear if the GPT is still active or running behind the scenes.

Suggestion: Create a simple Plugin Manager:

  • :white_check_mark: Installed GPTs
  • :cross_mark: Uninstalled GPTs
  • Hidden GPTs
  • Toggle: “Run in background: Yes/No”

It would mirror how plugin systems work in platforms like WordPress: clear, intuitive, and transparent.

:white_check_mark: Bonus: Simplify the Model Selector

Instead of nine options, why not simplify the interface like this:

  • GPT-4o (Best Available Model)
  • Lite Mode (Quick & Lightweight)
  • :test_tube: Experimental Features (For Nerds & Tinkerers)

That way, the power users still get their tools, and everyday users don’t get lost in a dropdown forest.

Again, I truly appreciate the platform, and I’m offering this feedback as someone who loves using it and wants to help it grow even better.

Warm regards,
Captain TL :anchor:
