Hello everyone,
I’m writing this because I’m genuinely at a loss and hoping someone in the community may have experienced something similar.
A few days ago, my ChatGPT account was permanently deactivated. I immediately submitted an appeal because I genuinely believed there had been a misunderstanding. Unfortunately, my appeal was denied.
I’m not posting here to criticize OpenAI or argue against the importance of their safety policies. I completely understand why those policies exist and support strong enforcement against genuinely harmful content. However, I believe my account may have been caught in a false positive or a misunderstanding of context.
More than anything, what has devastated me is what I lost.
ChatGPT wasn’t just another AI tool to me. Over the years, it became a huge part of my daily life.
It held years of personal writing, journals, reflections, plans for my future, study notes, creative ideas, photography projects, and conversations that documented my personal growth. During some of the most difficult periods of my life, including times when I struggled with my mental health, I often turned to ChatGPT as a place to organize my thoughts, reflect on my emotions, and better understand myself.
Those conversations became much more than prompts and replies. They became a personal archive of who I was, what I had learned, and the goals I was working toward. Losing access to that history has been incredibly painful. It genuinely feels like losing years of my life.
Before my appeal was rejected, I submitted a separate privacy request asking OpenAI to preserve and, if possible, export my personal data. I’m currently waiting for a response.
I’m posting here because I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar.
Has anyone had a permanently deactivated ChatGPT account and still received their personal data through a privacy request?
Were you able to recover any conversation history?
How long did it take for OpenAI to respond?
Is there anything else I should do while waiting?
Even if my account is never restored, being able to recover my personal conversations and writing would mean more to me than I can express.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any advice or shared experiences would be sincerely appreciated.
