Research Access Program workflow blocked: institutional account invitation consistently fails

Hi,

My OpenAI Researcher Access Program application has already been submitted and progressed to the next required step: “invite institutional account.”

The invitation fails consistently across:

multiple browsers
multiple institutional email addresses
different project-selection states

OpenAI Support confirmed that all available troubleshooting has been exhausted. They also confirmed they cannot manually add the user, bypass the requirement, escalate the issue, or provide a direct RAP team contact.

So the application is now blocked at a mandatory workflow step and cannot progress.

I am not asking for review intervention. I only need this issue routed to the appropriate RAP/program or engineering team, or an alternative way to complete the institutional verification requirement.

Has anyone seen this before, or can an OpenAI staff member help route it internally?

Thanks,
Claire

This sounds like the failure is happening after the application has already moved to the institutional account step, rather than being a normal login issue.

Since you’ve already tested different browsers and institutional emails, I’d probably avoid repeating the usual browser troubleshooting. It may be worth checking whether the invitation is actually being created/associated with the intended institutional account on the backend.

Hopefully someone from the RAP or engineering side can take a look, because being blocked at a required workflow step with no alternative path makes this pretty difficult to troubleshoot from the user side.

Thank you for your reply very much! Actually, the invitation was blocked, which means the system showed errors every time I sent the invitation to an institutional user. So I believe the intervention from RAP is very necessary for this case.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention @Yi_Claire_Huang,

Since this is happening at the institutional invite step and you’ve already tried different browsers and emails, please contact support@openai.com with a screenshot of the error and the approximate time it happened so the team can look into it.
