The Problem:
When engaging in long, complex, or ongoing chat sessions on the Free Version of ChatGPT, users eventually hit a strict per-chat memory capacity (context window limit). Once this limit is reached, the conversation can no longer smoothly maintain its context, requiring users to abandon the thread entirely.
Context & Clarification:
We are fully aware that ChatGPT has a global “Memory” feature (the one that saves facts across all chats). However, that is not what this request is about. This request specifically targets the context limit within a single, continuous conversation thread.
Proposed Solution / Feature Request:
I would like to request that OpenAI remove or significantly expand the per-chat memory limit for Free tier users, allowing us to keep everything organized in one single chat for long-term projects.
Alternatively, provide a native feature within the free interface to:
- Clear the chat’s internal token history without losing the visible text.
- Allow users to manually pin or select which previous messages in that specific thread must remain in active memory.
Why this matters:
Free tier users rely on continuous threads for learning, long-running coding projects, or extensive creative writing where keeping all information inside one chat is crucial. While paid tiers have specialized features like Projects to manage context, Free users must rely entirely on single threads. Raising or optimizing this limit would drastically improve the daily workflow and user experience for the broader community.
