Proposal: Model Selection Assistant for Non-Technical Users

Hello OpenAI team,

First of all, congratulations on the truly outstanding work you are doing. The pace of innovation and the quality of the tools you are delivering are simply remarkable.

As your GPT model family evolves rapidly (e.g., GPT-4o, O3, O4-mini, O4-mini High, GPT-4.5, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 Mini), it is becoming increasingly challenging for users to know which model is the best fit for their specific task—especially as capabilities shift and new variants are introduced.

I would like to suggest the development of a dedicated assistant or tool that helps users choose the most appropriate model based on a short task description and the type of input materials they plan to use (e.g., images, voice, hand-drawn sketches, structured data, documents, etc.).

Crucially, OpenAI is uniquely positioned to create such an assistant—because only your team has the full knowledge of the subtle differences, trade-offs, and special strengths of each model. The aim would not be to overwhelm users with technicalities, but rather to support practical, confident model selection—especially for those of us coming from non-specialist backgrounds or non-technical disciplines, who may rely heavily on your tools for creative, civic, or professional work outside of computing.

A “Model Selection Assistant” that recommends a model (and explains why) based on just a few simple inputs would be a real asset. It could save time, reduce resource usage, and increase user satisfaction—helping people focus on their goals rather than navigating a growing catalog of AI models.

Thank you for considering this proposal. I truly believe such a feature would make the GPT ecosystem even more accessible and empowering.

Warm regards
