Proposal: Add a “Prompt Tags” System to ChatGPT
This is my first time submitting a feature suggestion here, so I apologize in advance if I’ve misunderstood the proper format or etiquette.
Since I’m not fluent in English, I asked ChatGPT to help me compose this post based on my idea and usage patterns as a Japanese user. I hope this makes sense and is helpful to others!
What Are Prompt Tags?
Prompt tags are symbolic markers (e.g. [FREE]
, [TIDY]
, [ALT x3]
) placed at the beginning of a user message. These tags function as lightweight, structured signals to influence the model’s tone, output format, or constraints — similar to how control tokens or sliders are used in image generation tools like Stable Diffusion WebUI.
Why This Might Help
Currently, guiding ChatGPT toward specific tones or behaviors often requires long or ambiguous prompt wording. Prompt tags could offer a more intuitive and reusable way to steer the model without extensive rephrasing.
Potential benefits include:
Quicker control over style and tone without API parameters
Better consistency across sessions
Reduced repetition for ongoing creative or technical projects
Modular combinations, like
[FREE][POET]
for creative writing or[TECH][TIDY]
for clean documentation
Suggested Features (in theory)
- Support for user-defined tag dictionaries in Custom Instructions or UI
- Optional tag toggle buttons for frequently used modes (e.g., “Creative Mode”)
- System message preview showing how tags are interpreted
- Possible integration with the Memory feature for persistent tag preferences
Preliminary Testing
While I’ve only started testing this idea in recent sessions, I’ve seen encouraging signs.
Simple symbolic tags like [FREE]
, [TIDY]
, and [EXPAND]
already help guide response style more consistently — especially in tasks involving storytelling, dialogue, and structured explanations.
This is still early-stage exploration, but I believe a more formal tag system could enhance usability significantly.
Final Thought
A simple and flexible prompt tagging system could improve the customizability and clarity of ChatGPT for users at all levels.
Thanks for reading, and I’d appreciate any feedback — or pointers on how to better share this kind of idea in the community.
