Project files not being accessible to chats within the project

Hi OpenAI Team and Community,

I’d like to share some feedback about the “Project Files” feature in ChatGPT, particularly from the perspective of users working on multi-session, document-heavy tasks.

I initially expected that files uploaded to the “Project Files” section would be available across all chats within the project. However, I’ve realized that files are actually locked to individual chats, which has been incredibly frustrating.

This issue is worsened by the 10-file upload limit per chat, which is too restrictive for users like me who work with larger sets of reference documents (e.g., exam specifications, past papers, and mark schemes).

These two limitations severely hinder productivity for users managing long-term, document-heavy projects.

Key Suggestions:

  1. True Project-Level Files – Please introduce a persistent file library within each project that is accessible across all chats in that project.
  2. Increase the File Upload Limit per Chat – Raising the 10-file limit to 20, 30, or more would greatly benefit users working with multiple reference documents.

I know Projects are still evolving, but these changes would make a huge difference for users who depend on reference materials for ongoing content creation, research, or exam development.

I’d love to hear from other users who’ve experienced similar challenges – and whether there’s any insight from the OpenAI team on whether these improvements might be on the roadmap.

Thanks for your time and consideration!
