It would be very useful to have permanent private links to individual messages within ChatGPT conversations.
For example, while reading a long conversation, I could copy a link to a specific message and later use it like:
“We discussed this in another conversation — see [this message].”
Clicking the link would open the relevant conversation and automatically scroll to and highlight that exact message.
Ideally, this could work both:
- within the same conversation;
- across different conversations belonging to the same account.
These links should remain private by default and respect the user’s existing access permissions. They would be different from public/shared conversation links.
An additional useful feature would be the ability to ask ChatGPT:
“Take me to the part of our conversation where we discussed SQLite.”
or:
“Find the conversation where we discussed LOCKSS and take me to the relevant message.”
ChatGPT could then return a clickable link pointing directly to the relevant message.
This would effectively make a user’s ChatGPT history addressable and hypertextual, rather than just a collection of linear conversation threads.
For users with long conversations and a large conversation history, this could significantly improve navigation, knowledge management, and the ability to build on previous work.
