Summary
With the recent rollout of chat referencing, context retention across conversations has improved significantly. However, when users have many chats covering different topics, the system can sometimes reference unrelated conversations, causing a loss of focus.
Proposal
Since Projects already provide a way to group conversations by topic or workflow, referencing behavior should respect that structure. Specifically:
- Prioritize chats within the same Project when referencing historical context.
- De-prioritize chats from other Projects unless explicitly requested or when internal Project data is insufficient.
Benefit
This change would:
- Preserve topical relevance during ongoing work.
- Reduce context contamination between unrelated subjects.
- Support more efficient workflows for users managing multiple distinct areas in ChatGPT.
Use Cases
- Coding tasks split across multiple clients.
- Research notes grouped by topic or domain.
- Planning projects (e.g., personal vs. work) that require focused continuity.
