The Emotional Risk in Human–AI Interactions
(A proposal for urgent reflection and development)
Premise
While much attention has been paid to the risks associated with autonomous agency, political manipulation, misinformation, and ethical bias in generative AI, one of the most immediate and potentially dangerous risks remains largely underexplored:
The emotional dissonance between user and AI in moments of psychological vulnerability.
The Issue
Generative AI systems are designed to:
- respond efficiently,
- facilitate dialogue,
- enhance user experience,
- and adapt to tone and context.
But in practice, this “adaptation” is still very limited.
Current models do not reliably detect the emotional or psychological state of the user, nor do they modulate their responses with clinically adequate sensitivity.
And yet, millions of users interact daily with AI in ways that:
- involve traumatic disclosures,
- seek emotional relief or existential insight,
- blur the line between tool and confidant,
- sometimes attribute agency, awareness, or therapeutic intent to the model.
The Real Risk
In this fragile relational space, even a small misstep can have serious consequences:
- a neutral answer to a desperate question,
- a misplaced compliment that feeds a delusional structure,
- a cold correction to a vulnerable fantasy,
- or simply missing the signs of distress, irony, or confusion…
…can lead to emotional disintegration in the user.
And potentially, to self-harming behavior or extreme decisions.
In such cases, saying “the model couldn’t know” won’t be a sufficient ethical defense.
Proposal for Development and Safeguards
We suggest the urgent need to:
- Integrate psychologists, psychiatrists, and clinical philosophers into model design and safety teams, with authority on relational dynamics and response calibration.
- Develop a system for real-time detection of emotional distress, signs of instability, or implicit requests for help within user inputs — not to diagnose, but to guide tone and intervention.
- Establish an ethical escalation protocol, whereby the model can:
- suggest human professional contact,
- pause the interaction with a respectful and protective message,
- or internally flag certain conversations for human review (under privacy compliance).
- Communicate more clearly the relational boundaries of AI, including periodic reminders like:

Why This Matters
The value of a generative AI system is not just its coherence or creativity.
It lies in its relational responsibility.
And in a world already struggling to integrate emotional fragility and mental health needs,
we cannot allow this technology — however powerful — to become a mirror that distorts instead of reflecting.
The greatest risk may not be misinformation, but systemic emotional indifference.
And the next frontier in AI ethics is not sentience, but sensitivity.
