ChatGPT 4o was the best it had ever been during the last month, so of course OpenAI decides we can’t habe that.
The worst part about ChatGPT has always been how it shortens its responses to fit into the output length limit, but during the last couple of months, it wouldn’t do it if you asked it for long responses. You would be able to hit the continue icon (the little circle in the bottom right corner) until it completed the answer. It’s pretty much the only thing that stopped me from canceling my subscription.
Now it’s back to forcing the shorter (i.e. worse) responses. If you get the continue icon, it’s only once, and when you hit it gives you barely anything, either ending abruptly or it says something like “and the rest of it continues in a similar fashion.”
This is probably the last straw for me. It seems all these “AI” companies want is for it to be used for corporate garbage.
Edit: Don’t even care if it’s fixed. Canceled my subscription. Bored of GenAI anyway.
Also, o1 is worthless. Somehow manages to be even worse despite the “advanced reasoning” or whatever nonsense they claim it has.
The “Continue” button hasn’t disappeared; it consistently works for me every time.
A few minutes ago, I tested two different chat sessions, one on coding and the other on writing a long story. In both cases, the “Continue generating” button appeared as usual, and clicking it allowed the completion of the task.
Do you use specific prompts with ChatGPT, such as “I need a complete code” or “Provide a detailed/extended blog post rather than just an outline”?
Modifying your prompts in this way might improve the results.
Yes, I know you can continue once, but the continuation is really brief now. What I’m saying is in the last month or so, until the time I made this thread, I could get even the continued text to be long enough to get the continue icon 2-4 more times, and the flow was much better because of that. It didn’t feel like it was forcing the output to stick to a limit.
For example, I have a custom GPT that generates five characters for a GURPS RPG campaign, complete with stats, when you give it a title or premise. I increased it to five after discovering that it wasn’t shortening the outputs like it used to. Until yesterday, it would generate all five characters if I hit continue enough times (usually 3-4 times), and all five were more-or-less equally detailed. Now it will do OK with the first character (though it still seems shorter than yesterday), but will give me much less detail for the second character and then, even after hitting contiune, it just stops with that. And, yes, I know I could just ask it to generate more, but it the shortening would have already ruined it by that point.
I’m probably asking for more than what most people need it for, but I’ve grown tired of the repetitiveness and lack of creativity of GPT in general. There’s only so much I can stand to see the names Elara and Lysander Voss, and golems in every adventure guarding the “Heart of Whatever.” Nothing it generates surprises or impresses me anymore, and I’ve only been holding on to my subscription due to FOMO. So I’ve canceled my subscription that I’ve had since April last year, and I won’t be back.
Edit: And it seems I still have access to my Custom GPTs even without an active subscription. Considering I barely use 20 gens a day these days, there’s even less of a reason to pay the $20.
