Please don’t remove Canvas.
I know not everyone uses it, but for those of us who rely on it professionally, it’s one of the most valuable features ChatGPT has ever introduced.
My work involves producing detailed, structured crib sheets and reference documents that support complex conversations and decision-making. They need to be carefully worded, clinically accurate, well organised and continuously refined. Canvas is the only feature that allows me to work the way I need to.
The biggest benefit is that it turns ChatGPT into a collaborative editor rather than just a chatbot. I can keep my document open while discussing individual sections, edit wording as ideas develop, move content around, remove sections, capture new thoughts immediately and refine everything in real time. That live editing process is essential.
Without Canvas, every small change means scrolling through long chat responses, copying and pasting into another document, losing formatting, losing context and breaking concentration. Instead of focusing on the quality and accuracy of the work, you’re forced to spend time managing the document itself.
For professionals working in healthcare, education, training, consultancy and other knowledge-based roles, that difference is huge. Many of us aren’t using ChatGPT to generate a finished piece of work. We’re using it to think critically, challenge our ideas, improve wording, organise information and build high-quality reference materials that we continue to edit ourselves.
Canvas makes that possible because it allows:
-
Live editing while continuing the conversation.
-
Side-by-side discussion and document development.
-
Precise changes without regenerating an entire document.
-
Better organisation of long, complex pieces of work.
-
Continuous refinement while maintaining oversight of the whole document.
-
A genuine collaborative workflow instead of repeated copy-and-paste.
For me, Canvas is the feature that transformed ChatGPT from a useful chatbot into a professional productivity tool. It supports the way I work every single day and has become the main reason I maintain a paid subscription.
If Canvas is removed without an equivalent live editing workspace, I’ll genuinely have to look elsewhere. Other AI platforms already offer collaborative document editing, and for my workflow that capability is more valuable than almost any model improvement.
Please improve Canvas if it needs improving, but please don’t remove it. For many professionals, it’s not an optional extra. It’s the feature that makes ChatGPT fit for purpose.
