Pinned Reference Library (Side Panel for Conversation Snippets)

When working on long technical or creative projects, I often need to keep a few key pieces of information constantly available while the conversation continues.

I would like a side panel where I can pin items from the current conversation, such as:

  • Messages or excerpts
  • Images
  • Code snippets
  • Tables
  • Equations

The pinned items would remain visible independently of the chat scroll, acting as a small reference library instead of forcing me to scroll back through hundreds of messages.

Possible features:

  • Drag or “Pin” any message or selected text into the panel.
  • Reorder pinned items.
  • Add a short personal note to each item.
  • Group items into sections or tabs.
  • Click an item to jump back to its original location in the conversation.
  • Easily quote or insert a pinned item into a new message.

This would be especially valuable for technical discussions, programming, engineering, research, writing, and any long-running project where a few reference materials need to stay accessible while new ideas are explored.

In practice, this would make ChatGPT feel more like a working environment (similar to an IDE or research workspace) rather than a purely linear chat.

Why this would help

The current conversation model mixes stable reference information with the ongoing discussion. A pinned reference library would separate long-lived reference material from the conversational flow, reducing scrolling, preventing accidental use of outdated information, and making long conversations much easier to work with.
