Persistent Issues with File Handling – Looking for Clarity

Like many users, changes to file expiration and upload limits in ChatGPT have disrupted my workflow multiple times lately. Files uploaded via my Plus account now routinely expire within 15 minutes to 45 min with no advance notice. Occasionally, like tonight, the files expire almost instantly. After re-uploading, I hit an unexpected upload limit.

What makes this feel like a bug is that ChatGPT usually waits to notify me of file expirations after I ask directly—often pivoting to offering inaccurate responses instead of stating the file is gone. And the timeframe is inconsistent. Can anyone clarify whether this is something developers are working to improve?

Just this evening, ChatGPT has suggested several alternate file sharing methods: Dropbox and Google Drive with “anyone can view” permissions (it said if I did this it could access my files indefinitely); Bitly to shorten the Google Drive link; a zipped file; WeTransfer. All failed.

I’m seeking clarity on:

  • Real-time communication of upload limits & expiration policies

  • Possibility of re-establishing extended, reasonable file retention – at least several hours.

  • More transparent and accurate communication from within the ChatGPT app?

Also curious whether other users are experiencing the same issue of sudden, erratic input mid-workflow, even within custom GPTs.

Here’s a screenshot from tonight:

Replying to confirm that viewable links to direct, individual file links in Google Drive are not working, and uploaded files are disappearing instantly. ChatGPT is referring to this as a bug in the system.
