Permanent Data Loss When Signing Up from Guest Mode — No Warning Provided

As a guest user of ChatGPT, I spent significant time working on a detailed project. Upon signing up for an account (as prompted), my entire session was deleted without any warning or option to save or export my work. This resulted in the complete and irreversible loss of valuable content I had just created.

There was:

No pop-up or message warning that my guest session would be deleted upon sign-up.

No option to migrate the guest chat into my new account.

No way to recover the work after signing in.

This is a serious flaw in user experience. Many people use ChatGPT for meaningful, long-form work — not just casual queries — and this oversight creates a frustrating and trust-damaging situation for those users.

This needs to be addressed with urgency.

I strongly recommend implementing the following:

  1. A clear warning message before login/signup if a user is in guest mode with active work.

  2. An export or “save this chat” option prior to sign-up.

  3. Ideally, automatic migration of the current chat into the new account’s history.

This change is essential to protect users from unexpected data loss and to maintain trust in ChatGPT as a serious tool for work, creativity, and productivity.

Please prioritize this fix.

Thank you.
