Dear OpenAI team,
As a parent and active user of ChatGPT, I would like to request a feature that enables parental control through child-specific profiles within the ChatGPT application.
Description
I propose the ability to create a child profile within the ChatGPT app, where parents or guardians can define a custom system prompt that governs how the assistant interacts with the child. This prompt would restrict or guide conversations in alignment with the child’s age, values, and learning goals.
Use Case
Many families would benefit from allowing children to use ChatGPT in a safe and intentional way, but current tools do not offer sufficient control over the AI’s behavior. By enabling a parent-defined system prompt, the assistant could be instructed to:
- Avoid certain topics (e.g., violence, mature content).
- Encourage educational conversations.
- Answer only in a specific tone or format (e.g., child-friendly language).
- Emphasize curiosity, kindness, or specific moral values.
Key Features
- Ability to add one or more child profiles under a main account.
- Custom system prompt for each profile.
- Optional whitelisting or blacklisting of topics or words.
- Activity overview or chat history visibility for the parent (optional and privacy-aware).
- Age-appropriate default prompts to choose from (e.g., 6–9, 10–13).
Why It Matters
AI is rapidly becoming a part of everyday life. Giving parents the ability to shape how their children interact with AI is not just a matter of safety — it’s an opportunity to foster healthy, guided exploration and learning.
Thank you for considering this request. I believe this feature would empower more families to use ChatGPT in a responsible, meaningful, and future-ready way.
Sincerely,
Mike
