Paid Users Deserve Answers: A Potential Model Transparency Failure in ChatGPT

Hello OpenAI team and community,

I am posting this because I believe this issue deserves serious attention from OpenAI and the wider ChatGPT user community.

I am a long-term ChatGPT Plus subscriber. I chose ChatGPT because I trusted OpenAI’s technology, reliability, and commitment to users.

Recently, I encountered a serious concern regarding model transparency.

I selected a high-capability model in ChatGPT, but the actual behavior of my conversations appeared inconsistent with the selected model. Based on my observations and evidence, I have concerns that my requests may have been processed by a different, lower-capability model without clear notification.

I have already followed the support team’s instructions and provided:

  • Screen recordings;
  • Conversation links;
  • Detailed descriptions of the issue;
  • Additional evidence requested by support.

However, I still have not received a clear explanation regarding:

  1. Whether the selected model is always the model actually serving the conversation;
  2. Whether OpenAI uses undisclosed routing, fallback, capacity management, or other mechanisms that may change the delivered model experience;
  3. How paying users can verify which model is actually responding to their requests.

This is not simply a question about model performance.

This is a question of user trust.

When users pay for a premium subscription and select a specific model, they should have a reasonable expectation of transparency. Users should not need to reverse-engineer the system, analyze responses, or investigate technical details just to understand what service they are receiving.

I fully understand that large-scale AI systems require complex infrastructure, including routing and optimization. However, if these mechanisms affect the model experience, users deserve clear communication.

OpenAI has always emphasized the importance of building trustworthy AI. Transparency is a fundamental part of that trust.

My questions to OpenAI are:

  • Can paid users clearly know which model is actually answering their requests?
  • If automatic routing or fallback exists, why is it not clearly disclosed?
  • Will OpenAI provide better transparency tools for Plus and Pro users?

I hope this discussion can receive attention, because this issue may affect not only one user but many people who rely on ChatGPT as a professional tool.

Paid users do not expect perfection.

We expect transparency, reliability, and respect.

Thank you.
