Paid twice, credit shows up, but still getting “You exceeded your current quota” error

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a confusing quota issue with the API. Here’s what’s happening:

  • Yesterday, I made a $5 payment — it was successfully processed by my bank, but the credit did not appear in my OpenAI usage dashboard.
  • Today, I made a second $5 payment, and this time, it correctly appeared in my account as available credit.
  • However, even though I now see $5 in credit, my API requests still fail with the following error:

“You exceeded your current quota, please check your plan and billing details.”

:white_check_mark: What I’ve already checked:

  • I’m using the correct API key.
  • The API key is tied to the project where the credit is visible.
  • The model (gpt-3.5-turbo) is allowed.
  • I did not hit any rate limits or token usage caps.

:hammer_and_wrench: I believe this may be a backend billing sync issue — or possibly the first payment interfered with the quota.

Can anyone from the OpenAI team help me resolve this or confirm what might be wrong?

Thanks in advance!

When you first add a card, it is “authorized” to test it works, looks like a charge, but should come off after some time depending on your bank.

When you make an initial purchase of credits, it may take minutes to hours for your account to be fully unlocked and useful, despite then seeing the credit balance.

You can go to the bottom of your “limits” page and also see that your tier has been upgraded from “free” as an indication of payments taking action, as well as those model limits being increased from 3 RPM.

I don’t know, I’ve been waiting for an hour. I think they have problems with API payment. More importantly, they don’t help in any way from the support department. I honestly don’t recommend anyone to deposit money here until it becomes stable. Although the web interface payment works well, there is a problem with API payment and authorization. I don’t know if it will work, but those who have this problem from other countries should complain to the US Federal Trade Commission.
