OpenAI's December 11 GPT Retirement Creates an Unplanned Q4 Burden for Small Businesses

I’m a premium ChatGPT subscriber, early AI adopter and solopreneur who has built approximately 30 custom GPTs, including three to five that are essential to my business operations.

I’ve invested substantial time developing their instructions, knowledge bases, conversation starters and workflows after OpenAI encouraged users to create customized GPTs.

My concern isn’t simply resistance to plugins. It’s the timing, operational disruption and uncertainty created by retiring an environment many of us have only recently finished learning to use productively.

December 11 is not the real migration deadline.

For businesses relying on custom GPTs, the actual migration and testing must take place during late September, October and November.

That means an unplanned technology project during a critical fourth-quarter operating period, overlapping with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and year-end revenue activities.

Many small businesses spent the summer preparing for their fall marketing, sales and production cycles. We shouldn’t have to divert that investment into rebuilding AI workflows that are already functioning.

As a solopreneur, I don’t have a dedicated IT department to manage this transition. Every hour spent learning plugins, transferring knowledge, recreating workflows and testing output is an hour unavailable for my core business.

There is also a larger issue of platform confidence.

If I must rebuild my AI infrastructure anyway, why wouldn’t I consider moving it to Gemini, Claude or another provider?

I already subscribe to competing AI platforms. They offer alternative environments, knowledge-management capabilities and integrations that I can evaluate against my existing workflows.

The required migration gives me a natural opportunity to reconsider whether continuing my premium ChatGPT subscription makes business sense.

More importantly, what assurance do I have that plugins won’t be replaced by yet another architecture a year from now?

I want to invest in AI adoption, not continually reinvest in adapting to changes in proprietary AI environments.

I’m asking OpenAI to consider four things:

  1. Extend the custom GPT retirement deadline through at least Q1 2027, allowing small businesses to complete their fourth-quarter priorities.

  2. Grandfather existing private custom GPTs, or preserve a dedicated GPT-like environment for users whose workflows depend on persistent instructions, knowledge and separate conversations.

  3. Provide a reliable migration and validation process that minimizes the time businesses spend rebuilding functioning workflows.

  4. Establish clearer commitments around configuration portability, product stability and support for users who invest heavily in customizing OpenAI’s products.

I recognize that OpenAI must continue developing its technology. But customers also need enough stability to recover the time and money they’ve invested in adopting that technology.

I’m interested in hearing from other builders, particularly solopreneurs and small-business owners. How many custom GPTs are you managing, what will migration require, and how is the December deadline affecting your business plans?
