Hi,
So, I just wanted to share my experience in hopes of finding some developer or researcher engaged in related pursuits.
My name is Eric. I’m 40 years old, I have schizoaffective disorder and ptsd. It can make life complicated, but in spite of early homelessness and other struggles I managed to graduate at the top of my class with a BFA in drawing, painting, and printmaking. I am currently pursuing degrees and credentials in art therapy and mental health counseling. I love researching and educating myself about my disorder and anything that could help make my life easier.
I’ve been using ChatGPT to help me organize my thoughts and better articulate myself during therapy sessions in particular; along with speechify. I know it’s a reach, but I was hoping that there might be some interest in this and other applications for AI to help people like my with psychiatric disabilities. I have also been using ai to assist with my art and writing. Not this particular bit, but more boring numbers oriented and detailed scientific writing for my own research.
But yea, thanks so much community of awesome people who are helping. I really appreciate it. I wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
Eric
Welcome to the community Eric! I’m very happy to hear how much chatGPT and technology has been helping you!
I’m sure many people are currently working on solutions of all sorts in all kinds of areas. I’m personally working in education. Part of my work helps IEP students.
An Individualized Education Plan (or Program) is also known as an IEP. This is a plan or program developed to ensure that a child with an identified disability who is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction and related services.
I’m sure there are others out there working on all kinds of solutions, including some that might be specific for psychiatric disabilities. Not sure if they roam around this forum, but hopefully some do!
Cheers for what you do. One of my parents teaches developmentally disabled kids. It’s definitely not easy work, and doesn’t stop at the school doors. I’ve kinda wondered about using speechify as an option for verbally impaired children to have an opportunity to be heard in their own voice and use that as a starting point for speech therapies. All sorts of cool applications for this technology, I think. All the best.
Eric,
I am trying to use OpenAI’s API Assistant on my website for homeless individuals. As you probably know, a disproportionate amount of unsheltered people have an SPMI. How can I best detect that in my dialogues? I want to point folks to the various mental health resources here in Charlotte, but I don’t want to alienate anybody in the process. Suggestions?
Hi,
So the formal diagnostic process should always be left up to credentialed individuals. That being said, I would recommend reading the DSM 5 and ICD-10 sections on psychotic, personality, and autism spectrum disorders (also substance use disorders and PTSD) as a starting point for knowing the signs and symptoms. There are even diagnostic worksheets for different disorders and risk assessment. The text can likely be cut and paste into your ai’s memory, whatever the process is for that. There are trained AI therapy tools that may also help with assessing message content to look for symptomatic markers. There is a lot of nuance to the categorizations, but typically, people are good at sensing SPMI instinctively. If something feels off, maybe contact a local state funded mental health resource to see what help they can offer. I know the population that you’re working with can be forgotten sometimes.
On that note, I just wanted to say thank you. The work you’re doing means a lot to me personally. Best of luck.
-Eric
P. S. — just wanted to add that I hope you’re doing ok. I’m in the southeast as well. We were hit pretty hard and just got power back on. I have heard that Charlotte was pretty bad as well.
