I just bookmarked this – so someone else can take the heat for posting ChatGPT system prompt dumps that answer the daily thread “why doesn’t API/Playground/My Bot act exactly like ChatGPT”.
(and then figure out the only place they can be recalled…)

(also a thing - getting quality “do stuff” chat shares moderated and 404’d.)

I was unable to replicate this.
This does also look like a helpful assistant’s reply to a request.
Knowledge cutoff: 2022-01
Current date: 2023-09-19"
Can somebody explain this in a more formal style? Is there a public link by OpenAI?
Or did the September version revert back to the old date?
Edit:
This documentation page does not confirm the new date:

Which version did you ask? This seems to be only for gpt-4
There’s a small mention about it in on this page ChatGPT — Release Notes | OpenAI Help Center
It is no longer limited to data before September 2021.
Would be nice with a specific date in the documentation though
Edit: small typo

That is because Bing webbrowsing is now activated again, not because the training data has been extended.
I also did ask 3.5 and 4 and would say the link I posted earlier contains a quite definite answer.

Let’s see if I can convince you in another way
Try this prompt and see if you can remember some of these:
Provide a list of amusing world events that happened in January 2022
vb

Yes, this was amusing:
I’m unable to provide real-time or the most recent updates as my training only covers information up until September 2021. However, I can suggest looking up news outlets, social media, or news aggregation services for the latest and amusing events from January 2022. Some popular sources include websites like BBC, CNN, or local news outlets. There are also many mobile apps and social media platforms like Twitter that provide real-time updates on current events.
Remember, what might be amusing to one person may not be amusing to another, so the categorization of an event as amusing can be subjective. Nonetheless, many platforms and sources can provide a glimpse into the lighter or more entertaining side of recent news.
If I think this is amusing, I need to get back to work. Now!

@_j mentioned the different A/B testing methods used by OpenAI in another thread.
Maybe I am simply on the receiving end right now.

True, I believe I’ve been on the receiving end of A/N testing a few times as well, usually doesn’t last super long though

A ChatGPT user reported here they got a free upgrade to an alpha GPT-4 offered to them in the selection bar – from a free account. So some stuff is going on.
Pre-training GPT-4 was finished mid-2022. From the shared “fun facts of Jan 2022” prompt, here’s gpt-4-314 so we can see any improvement:
While January 2022 was a month filled with serious news and events, there were also some amusing and lighthearted moments. Here are a few that stood out:
-
James Webb Space Telescope’s “selfie”: After its successful launch in December 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope captured a “selfie” of its deployed sunshield, delighting space enthusiasts and the general public alike.
-
Escaped cow in New York: A cow named Bonnie escaped from a farm in New York and roamed the streets for several hours before being safely captured. The incident went viral on social media, with people cheering for Bonnie’s brief taste of freedom.
-
“Wordle” craze: The online word-guessing game “Wordle” gained immense popularity in January 2022, with people around the world sharing their daily scores and competing with friends and family.
-
Squirrel caught stealing packages: A mischievous squirrel in Chicago was caught on camera stealing packages from people’s doorsteps. The video went viral, and the squirrel became an internet sensation.
-
Snowball fight world record attempt: Residents of Anchorage, Alaska, attempted to break the world record for the largest snowball fight in January 2022. Although they fell short of the record, the event brought the community together for a fun and frosty day.
Please note that these events are meant to be amusing and lighthearted, and may not have had significant global impact.
It seems that #1 and #3 are most likely to be real knowledge.
(chat share). “GPT 3.5”, though (even after an upgrade to not giving up prompt secrets), doesn’t do so well with amusing 2022 facts.
FWIW,
There is a discrepancy between GPT-4-8k and GPT-4-32k. Spoiler alert, 32k has 1 more month of knowledge!
GPT-4-8k:
As an AI, I can’t predict events occurring after my last model’s training cut-off in September 2021. I suggest checking a reliable news source for information about amusing events from January 2022.
GPT-4-32k:
As an AI developed by OpenAI, I don’t have the ability to access real-time data or events beyond October 2021. Therefore, I cannot provide you with a list of amusing world events that happened in January 2022. I recommend checking out recent news sources or databases for this information.

Hello Chat GPT4 my old friend,
I see your are having trouble with facts again
The James Webb selfie was taken in February,
The cow escaped in 2017 before slaughtering
The squirrel was filmed in March 2021
And I don’t want to go on
Time for sounds of silence

Yeah there seems to be some discrepancy, I don’t think this is a hallucination though:
me: what happened in the life of Bob Saget in January 2022?
Response:
In January 2022, comedian and actor Bob Saget passed away unexpectedly. He was found dead in his hotel room in Orlando, Florida on January 9, 2022. Saget was 65 years old at the time of his death…
Here’s the conversation: https://chat.openai.com/share/a79fed90-b7e8-453f-8a81-5db2695f2f79
Wiki for reference
From the wiki:
At about 4 p.m. ET on January 9, 2022, Saget was found dead in his room at a Ritz-Carlton hotel near Williamsburg in Orange County, Florida.[55] At the time of his death, Saget was on a stand-up tour and had performed in Ponte…

I started to check “your assigned model’s” response, too, and found that the Betty White challenge thing is apparently, seemingly true with regards to the what and when.

Today I asked ChatGPT 4 about a sports event in January 2022 and it did return the story about a famous tennis player arriving at a tournament while having COVID.
This is correct.
Then using this prompt:
Provide a list of amusing world events that happened in January 2022
the reply is still a refusal.
Not a fan of so much variety in responses.

Can anybody confirm the new cut off date is April 2023?
It is not. The consensus is that the latest date is 01/22 but the last official documented date is 10/21.
I was thinking this Knowledge Cutoff is hallucination because there were not enough information around community yet.
In my case, gpt-4 gave me exact date and explanation for events. I tested about asking events and when it happened. It certainly know about events after Jan 2022.
For example, I asked about the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Queen Elizabeth, and Python 3.11 features. GPT-4 gave detail explanation with accurate date.
That’s fine.
The knowledge cutoff is January 2022, though it may have limited knowledge of some events past that date.
This is known and expected behaviour.

I’ve had GPT in various forms report “as of my latest update in March 2022” (and now back to Sept 2021 from also January 2022 being pretrained answers), and the ability to answer the same question magically appear and disappear from API, so it’s clear there’s some retraining and model monkeying going on.
The AI is so over-trained on denying answers and inserting cutoff dates without them now even being placed in a system prompt, that it takes GPT-4 and excessive prompting to even make your augmentation injection be acknowledged.
Any less than both system and user prompting and you still get “Sept 2021, denied, search the web.” At least today.
