New ChatGPT dark theme is too black on desktop

The recent ChatGPT dark theme update on desktop browsers became much darker and closer to pure black compared to the previous gray-toned dark mode.

For long reading, coding, and study sessions, the older theme was significantly more comfortable on the eyes. The new high-contrast black background with bright white text causes noticeable eye strain and feels harsher during extended use.

This is especially noticeable on Windows desktop monitors and Chromium browsers like Brave.

Please consider:

  • bringing back the previous gray dark theme

  • adding multiple dark theme variants

  • adding a contrast/intensity option for dark mode

  • improving accessibility for long desktop usage sessions

Many productivity-focused apps avoid pure black themes on desktop because softer gray backgrounds are easier for prolonged reading.

The current theme may look modern, but usability and comfort during long sessions matter more for many users.

Please bring back the previous gray dark theme or add more dark mode options

Agreed - it’s the same reason I don’t use X - the white on black text really messes with my eyes, after half an hour of reading (sometimes less) I have to go take a nap, all I see are lines.
This is a well known issue with high contrast text, and only a NEWB UI “expert” would think it was a good idea.

If they want to add a “poke your eyeballs with a fork” dark mode theme then go for it. But don’t take away the one that has been working fine for so long.

EDIT: Until they change it back I will not be using ChatGPT - Claude still has a UI made by experts in the field. Even DeepSeek’s UI is better. Which is a pity, ChatGPT was my favorite.

Yes. Please fix this asap! Cannot figure out why more people aren’t complaining about it. White on black on a desktop is pure evil. Even though this model is superior, the UI is a major weakness and if they don’t get it working better soon, people will drift away. I am trying out other models now. Tired of waiting for this UI to improve. It has actually regressed IMO

Could you post screenshots of both the readable version and the ChatGPT variation?

I understand the eye-strain concern, and I would hate to see an echo-chamber effect where others switch to a version that is harder on the eyes.

Hey @all! This is helpful feedback. The eye-strain concern makes sense, especially for folks spending long sessions reading, coding, or studying in dark mode.

If anyone has screenshots of the older gray theme vs the current darker version, please drop them here since that would help show the difference clearly.

I can’t share a timeline right now, but I’ll get this feedback in front of the right team.

It’s pitch black now. Before it is like this same grey of the forum

Now, regardless of choice like Dark, System, and all type of contrast it stays pitch black

It looks like this now. We just want the old background back please.

Hey @geardoom3 and @Gustavo1711, appreciate the screenshots.

I can’t share a timeline right now, but I’ll pass this added context along internally.

So here a comparaison of the same segment of conversation i had. the Grey was before and the black is now.

I’ll add my voice to the rest of the other, the pure black is way to hard on the eyes. Mobile and now PC are too black.

Hey @Shinri-san! thanks for sharing the comparison. That makes the difference really clear.

I hear you on the pure black feeling too harsh, especially now that it’s showing up across both mobile and desktop. I can’t share a timeline right now, but I’ll add this to the feedback around bringing back a softer gray dark theme or adding more dark mode options.
