As ChatGPT becomes part of everyday family life, the concept of “one account per device” no longer reflects how people actually use AI at home.
Please add Netflix-style Family Profiles to the ChatGPT app
ChatGPT is increasingly becoming a family application, especially on shared iPads and other household devices.
But the current account experience assumes that one device = one user.
That doesn’t work very well for families.
The real-world problem
In my household, we have multiple iPads, and several family members use ChatGPT.
One adult account may be signed in on multiple devices, but some of those devices are also used by minor children for:
- Homework
- Studying
- Creative projects
- Research
- Everyday questions
This creates an awkward situation.
When a child picks up an iPad with the parent’s ChatGPT account already signed in, ChatGPT has no simple way to know:
“Who is using ChatGPT right now?”
The result can be:
- Adult and child conversations mixed together
- Memory and personalization becoming confusing
- Children unintentionally using an adult account
- Parents having to repeatedly log out and log back in
- Parental Controls becoming difficult to use in a household with shared devices
OpenAI has already introduced Parental Controls for teen accounts and account switching, which are steps in the right direction.
But there is still a missing layer.
The solution: Family Profiles
Please add a Netflix-style profile selector to the ChatGPT app.
When ChatGPT opens on a shared family device:
Who’s using ChatGPT?
Mom
Dad
Child 1
Child 2
Child 3
Each profile would connect to that person’s own ChatGPT account.
Optional protection
Profiles could support:
- Face ID
- Touch ID
- PIN
- Device-specific default profile
For example:
Mom ![]()
Requires Face ID or PIN.
Child 1
Teen account with parental controls.
Child 2
Teen account with parental controls.
Make it device-aware
This would be especially useful if ChatGPT remembered the preferred profile on each device.
For example:
Mom’s iPhone
→ Opens directly to Mom
Child 1’s iPad
→ Opens directly to Child 1
Family room iPad
→ Shows the profile selection screen
This would eliminate the need for families to repeatedly log in and out.
Why this matters more for ChatGPT than Netflix
Netflix profiles separate entertainment preferences.
ChatGPT profiles would separate something much more important:
- Conversation history
- Memory
- Personalization
- Age-related safety settings
- Parental Controls
- Study preferences
- Creative preferences
For an AI assistant that learns from conversations and personalizes responses, mixing multiple family members into one account can create much more confusion than mixing movie recommendations.
This could build directly on existing OpenAI features
OpenAI already has:
- Parental Controls for teens
- Teen accounts
- Account switching
- Memory
- Age prediction / age verification
A Family Profile layer could connect these existing systems into a much more natural household experience.
The parent would remain the parent account.
Each child would have their own account.
But the family would be able to access those accounts seamlessly from shared devices.
The key UX principle
Families should not have to manage ChatGPT accounts like IT administrators.
The experience should be:
Open ChatGPT → Choose who is using it → Authenticate if necessary → Start chatting.
No logging out.
No digging through Settings.
No accidentally opening Mom’s conversations.
No mixing everyone’s Memory.
No guessing who is holding the iPad.
In one sentence
Please make ChatGPT work for families the way Netflix works for families — with simple, secure profiles that separate users while making shared-device access effortless.
This would make ChatGPT significantly easier and safer to use in households where parents and children share devices.
